Para-Rescue Member In Action -- An Airbase In Japan -- In a recent training mission held the U.S. Air Force's veteran 3rd Air Rescue Squadron, four of its seasoned para-rescue team members made the first Jump from the larger H-19 Sikorsky helicopter used by the unit. S69-21036 (26 May 1969) --- A Navy helicopter arrives to recover the Apollo 10 astronauts, seen entering a life raft, as their spacecraft floats in the South Pacific immediately after touchdown. U.S. Navy underwater demolition team swimmers assist in the recovery operations. Already in the life raft are astronauts Thomas P. Stafford (left), commander, and John W. Young (right), command module pilot. Splashdown occurred at 11 53 a.m., May 26, 1969, about 400 miles east of American Samoa and about four miles from the recovery ship to conclude a successful eight-day lunar orbit mission. The Admiral Takes Off-U.S. Warships Arrive -- The Sikorsky helicopter takes off from the deck of the Missouri on its flight to Southsea Common. Rear-Admiral Smith, who was paying a call on the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, is seen at the rear window of the aircraft. Shortly after the 45,000-tons battleship Missouri and nine other ships of the United States Navy's 1949 Midshipmen's Practice Squadron arrived at Spithead today (Friday) for an eight-days visit to Portsmouth, Rear-Admiral Allan E.Smith, the flag officer, paid a call on the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth by helicopter. The aircraft took off form the battleship's deck and landed at Southsea Common. It was on board the Missouri that the Japanese surrender was signed in Tokyo Bay in September, 1945. June 17, 1949.
