Head of Apollo, (Apollo Sauroctonos), found in Kifissia in Athens. Now at the Benaki Museum. The marble head of the Roman period was probably made in Attica. It is one of the best copies of the famous bronze statue of Apollo Sauroktonos (lizard-slayer) made by Praxiteles in the mid-4th century B.C.

They originated as markers surmounted with an image of the god Hermes, but by the Roman period they were no longer restricted in subject. Private villas were filled with herms showing the heads of satyrs, maenads, young athletes, or philosopher portraits. This decorative female herm would have made an appropriate garden decoration. Date: A.D. 69-96.The carefully arranged flat waves of hair around the face and the long loose hair in back indicate that this man held some position in the imperial retinue. Certain figures represented in the triumphal processions carved on the Arch of Titus in Rome and on the Arch of Trajan at Beneventum are shown with long hair. They carry painted panels, shields, or candelabra. Although their exact function or office is unknown, the long hair must have been an important distinguishing trait. Marble portrait bust of Severus Alexander. Culture: Roman. Dimensions: Overall: 29 1/8 x 29 1/2 in. (74 x 75 cm). Date: ca. A.D. 230-235.The young emperor Severus Alexander (r. A.D. 222-235) is wearing a toga contabulata, with a large overfold (sinus) across the chest and a diagonal fold extending over the left shoulder and down the back. The type is distinctive of later Roman portraits in which the subject is shown in formal civic dress. The bust was probably produced in an imperial workshop at Rome and was set up in a prominent public place, perhaps with other imperial portraits representing his predecessors or with other members of the imperial family, such as his mother Julia Mamaea. The head, carved with great skill and sensitivity, combines a sense of growing maturity and power with a still visible youthful delicacy. The last emperor of the Severan dynasty, Severus Alexander died violently in Germany at the age of twenty-six. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Date: ca. 40-20 B.C..This portrait of an elderly Roman matron conveys an air of gravitas and dignity that befits the social standing of the subject. Like most portraits of Roman women, this one can be dated closely by the hairstyle, which combines a braided bun worn high on the head and the so-called nodus, a flat braid pulled back over the top of the head. In antiquity, all marble sculpture was painted. Here, the indication of eyelashes can still be seen on the upper lid of the right eye, and traces of pigment remain on the same eye and on the hair. Mask of a woman with corkscrew locks and bang A.D. 50-150 Roman Period The plaster mummy masks derive from pharaonic traditions, in which the mask served as a substitute for the head of the deceased and as a means of elevating him or her to immortal status. The derivation is often reflected in paintings and texts located on the mantle surrounding the head. Like the painted mummy portraits, the masks suggest strongly individualized appearances and affect Roman fashions in hairstyle, jewelry, and dress. They follow, however, a somewhat different pattern. For example, female masks may have coiffures that combine Roman arrangements of the upper part of the hair with long corkscrew locks that were considered typically Egyptian. Despite the seeming individuality of the masks, most faces were made in a mold. Distinguishing details were worked in the plaster with a spatula or knife.
