Date: ca. 1510-20.As the only known work that may be ascribed with reasonable certainty to Gian Giacomo Negroli (1463-1543), this previously unrecorded helmet is a major addition to the small corpus of works marked or signed by members of the celebrated Negroli family of fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Milanese armorers--no more than twenty pieces in total--of which key examples are in the Metropolitan Museum's collection. The father of Filippo Negroli (ca. 1510-1579), one of the greatest armorers of Renaissance Europe, and of Francesco Negroli (ca. 1522-1600), a consummate damascener, Gian Giacomo was an eminent armorer in his own right. Active in Milan around the turn of the sixteenth century, he was one of the most successful members of the Negroli family, and it was in his works

Close Helmet for the Field ca. 1600-1610 French The decoration of this helmet, with its raised ribs outlining parallel bands etched with trophies of arms, is typically French and is found on a distinctive group of armors dating to the reign of Henry IV (1590-1610). Siege Helmet ca. 1600-1650 French Siege engineers, sappers, and bombardiers regularly came under fire at close range and thus were equipped with extraordinarily heavy shot-proof armor. The bowl and cheeks of this example are protected by a double thickness of plates. The right side of the bowl has a proofmark--the dent caused by a bullet fired at a prescribed distance as proof of the armor plate's strength--but the shot did not penetrate the sturdy reinforce to the bowl below.. Helmet (Hoshi- Kabuto) in the 16th-Century Style probably late 17th-early 18th century Inscribed by Saotome Ienari Japanese The overlapping edges of the iron plates form ridges (suji). Pauldron for Right shoulder, c. 1560-70. Italy, 16th century. Steel, blued and gilded; overall: 26.4 x 28 cm (10 3/8 x 11 in.). This element for the shoulder once belonged to a suit decorated by the bluing technique, a process of superheating armor plates to achieve a deep blue color. Bluing required heating to at least 590 degrees Fahrenheit, the temperature at which oxidation occurs. Although the original color is now darkened it would have originally been a deep shade of blue. It was further enhanced with gilding to create additional contrast for a refined appearance.

Parade Helmet à l'Antique ca. 1630 French, probably Paris A reflection of the classical tradition in early Baroque France, this parade helmet was designed in imitation of ancient Roman examples. The tall arched comb was originally fitted with an elaborate feathered plume, and the colorful effect was heightened by the use of gold paint and gilt rivet heads. The padded lining, still intact, was once covered with pink silk. Undoubtedly created for a member of the court of Louis XIII (r. 1610-43), this wonderfully preserved helmet was probably intended for use in a mock joust or carousel.. Parade Helmet à l'Antique. Composed Armor ca. 1550-80 Helmet, arm defenses, gauntlets and leg defenses by Wolfgang Grosschedel German This armor is composed of elements from three different armors, all made in southern Germany for Spanish patrons. The helmet, arm defenses, gauntlets, and leg defenses belong to a large garniture made in 1554 for the future Philip II of Spain (reigned 1556-98) by the leading armorers of Landshut, Wolfgang Grosschedel (recorded 1517-1562) and his son Franz (recorded 1555-1579). The elements of Philip's armor are distinguished by their decoration of stylized cloud bands. The associated breastplate, probably made in Augsburg about 1550, is decorated with the cross used by the Spanish knightly orders of Alcantara and Calatrava. The backplate, also made in Augsburg about 1550, appears to be part of an armor for Fernando Alvarez de Toledo (1508-1583), third duke of Alba. The gorget (collar) is Italian, made about 1580.. Pointed Morion ca. 1590 Italian, Brescia Although worn with age, this elaborately etched morion is particularly interesting for the mark struck at the front of its brim--the Lion of Saint Mark, the Venetian control stamp. Venice had subjugated the armor-manufacturing city of Brescia in the fifteenth century, and, as a result, Brescia became the main supplier of armor used in Venetian service. Similarly marked morions are preserved in the former arsenal of the Serenissima in the Palazzo Ducale, Venice. Morion helmet with driven out lily, anonymous, 1550 - 1600 moron Morion helmet, iron, gushed with white driven lily, made from two halves. High helmet with a high comb whose edge is cacked. Around the base of the helmet, rosettes. The valve has high rising points at the front and back. The edge of the valve has flared. On the left and right-hand side on the helmet copper-colored rivets with which the kinriem is attached to the inside. The leather kinriem consists of two leather tires whose ends are attached to each other. Each band has five metal plates to which two rivets are attached to. Mail Shirt with Inscribed Rings 15th-16th century possibly Iranian Constructed entirely of interlocking riveted links of flattened iron except along the sleeves, hem, and front and rear slits, where the links are made of flattened copper alloy, this shirt opens down the front and extends downward over the hips. The majority of the links are each stamped on the obverse with the names of Allah and the five leading imams of the Shia (i.e. Muhammad, 'Ali, Fatima, Hasan, and Husayn), who are also collectively known as The Five (Panj tan) or the People of the Cloak (Ahl al-Kisa). These links are occasionally interspersed with links stamped with the talismanic invocation (translated): "There is no hero like 'Ali and no sword like Dhu'l faqar." These holy inscriptions ensured that the shirt provided the wearer with talismanic protection against peril. This is one of very few Islamic inscribed mail shirts with decorative copper-alloy borders that are known to survive. A related example is also

Sallet late 15th century Spanish or Italian Intended for infantrymen, sallets of this distinctive type are found in large numbers in the armory of the dukes of Medinaceli in the Museo Ejercito, Madrid. Some of them are struck with Milanese-style marks, suggesting they may have been made in Italy for export to Spain; alternately, they may have been made in Spain and marked in imitation of the more prestigious and expensive Italian originals. The mottled surface of the beads adds to the design, giving it a textural effect. Margaret S. Bedell (1861-1932) donated, by gift or bequest, over 500 objects to the Brooklyn Museum, including furniture, quilts, samplers, costume and Native American beadwork. Her collection of American and European beaded bags includes examples from Philadelphia and the Catskill Mountain region of New York State, as well as Italy, Austria, Germany, and Holland.
