Combat that took place in the town of Arapiles, south of Salamanca, in which they faced the allied armies of Spain, England and Portugal, under the command of General Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (1769-1852), against the Napoleonic troops led by Marshal Marmont, which were defeated. This French defeat dealt a severe blow to Napoleon's plans to invade Portugal, as it prevented the installation of the bases and arsenals that were necessary to carry out the invasion. The Battle of Ramillies was a major engagement of the War of the Spanish Succession, fought on 23 May, 1706. The encounter was a resounding success for the Allied forces of the Dutch Republic, English and their auxiliaries but the battle had followed a year of indecisive campaigning in 1705 where Allied over-confidence and Dutch hesitancy after their success at the Battle of Blenheim had resulted in an abortive campaign along the Moselle, forcing the Duke of Marlborough to abandon his plans for a push into France.
