The Commemorative Area also consists of five World War II-era buildings set aside to help tell Fort McCoys unique story. These facilities are representative of the types found in the cantonment area when it was constructed in 1942.

Cannon of the Amsterdam Admiralty. This ships gun could fire massive iron balls weighing 18 pounds. The gun was primed by loading a ball with powder and a wad from the front, down the muzzle. The shot would be fired by lighting the fuse at the touch hole. To absorb the recoil, the 400 kilo cannon was mounted on a wheeled carriage. It took eight men to operate the gun.

The 173rd Airborne Brigade is the U.S. Army's Contingency Response Force in Europe, providing rapidly deployable forces to the United States European, African, and Central Command areas of responsibility. Forward deployed across Italy and Germany, the brigade routinely trains alongside NATO allies and partners to build partnerships and strengthen the alliance.
