The Armourer. Armourer in his workshop is using hammer to shape a piece of armour. On display in front of his shop are items he has made, including a full suit of armour. Woodcut by Jost Amman (1535-1591) Swiss engraver.

A draftsman signs a portrait. A draftsman serves from a 'vetri piani' or glass table device. A glass plate in a wooden window is placed straightly between the draftsman and his model. With a greasy pin, the contours of the image are drawn on the glass. This drawing is then transferred to paper. The instrument was recommended by Leonardo da Vinci for drawing landscapes. At Dürer it is used to draw a portrait.

Quack; Monkey game. A 16th-century street scene with monkeys dressed as people. Central to the foreground a quack sells a remedy (or perhaps for) hair loss. Saint Jerome in His Study is one of Albrecht Dürers three so-called master engravings, along with Knight, Death, and the Devil and Melencolia I, on view nearby. Each image emerges from the paper with extraordinary clarity, with different textures and minute gradations of light and shadow conjured from a careful, dense arrangement of inked marks and lines. Dürers contemporary, the scholar Erasmus of Rotterdam, praised the artists graphic brilliance, stating that he “could express absolutely anything in monochrome, that is with black lines only—shadows, light, reflections, emerging and receding forms.” Like the Evangelists in Simon Benings nearby illuminations, Saint Jerome here appears at work in a cozy study rendered in careful perspective.
