Doña María de la Luz Padilla y Gómez de Cervantes Attributed to Nicolás Enríquez (Mexican, active 1730-1768). Doña María de la Luz Padilla y Gómez de Cervantes, ca. 1735. Oil on canvas, Oval: 35 3/8 x 26 in. (89.9 x 66 cm). Throughout the Spanish empire and in Europe in general, the lesser nobility and wealthy merchant classes imitated the royal courts in their patronage of the arts, including the commissioning of full-length portraits. Doña María de la Luz (whose adult portrait is also on view in this exhibition) is portrayed here in her Mexico City town house with a toddlers rattle and a silver-mounted coral pacifier. Despite her young age, the sitter wears an embroidered silk dress in the height of French fashion complemented by a costly pearl necklace and matching earrings and bracelets. In Spanish America, the early eighteenth century saw the rise of the female portrait, which had been nearly nonexistent in seventeenth-century Mexico and Peru. The painting of John Van Cortlandt,

The consummate mezzotint engraver Valentine Green created this iconic image a year after the Enlightenment-era painter Joseph Wright of Derby completed the original painting (National Gallery, London). Greenís limpid moonlit effects and riveting velvet-black ink aptly render this nocturnal scientific demonstration as a matter of life or death the bird in the glass sphere begins to suffocate as air is pumped out of the chamber, leaving the breathless viewers uncertain of its ultimate fate.. In a Levantine Port John Singer Sargent (American, born Italy, 1856-1925). In a Levantine Port, ca. 1905-1906. Translucent watercolor and touches of opaque watercolor with graphite underdrawing, 12 1/16 x 18 1/8 in. (30.6 x 46 cm). In keeping with his approach to port subjects, Sargent offered no particularities of place in this scene but instead lavished his attention on the vibrant colors of reflected light and cast shadows that play across the rust-stained white hulls and the network of masts, spars, and riggings. He seems to have reveled in the transparency of the watercolor medium, which allowed the white of the paper to add a particular brilliance to scenes such as this one. American Art ca. 1905-1906
