Date: 1889.In an old district of Amsterdam, Whistler represents two figures emerging from a shadowed workshop at the edge of a canal. Leaning against a slender post, a young man clad in an apron looks across the water as his female companion dips a cloth into it. The still, dark, reflective surface fills the foreground and doubles the forms, and the title, Pierrot, evokes a tragicomic commedia dell'arte character suggested by the pallor of the man's face. The print belongs to a set the artist made in Amsterdam during a two-month stay in early fall 1889, following his summer marriage to Beatrice Philip, the widow of architect Edward William Godwin. William Henry Fox Talbot, one of the inventors of photography, developed a negative-positive process that permitted the reproduction and dissemination of images with relative ease. In The Pencil of Natureóone of the first commercially produced, photographically illustrated booksóTalbot noted an advantage of the new art form beyond mere duplication ìit enables us at pleasure to alter the scale, and to make the copies as much larger or smaller than the originals as we may desireÖ . Yet preserving all the proportions of the original.î Here Talbot reduced an 1829 engraving by Luigi Rossini of a Roman arch to approximately 15 percent of its original size. Still Life with Travelling Trunk Made 1640-1654 Netherlands. Leonard Bramer spent most of his professional career traveling throughout the Netherlands, France, and Italy, and he was deeply influenced by the dramatic chiaroscuro paintings of Caravaggio. Although primarily known as a painter and draftsman of history and religious scenes, he created a handful of still lifes, each with a moralizing theme. Here, the overturned wine glass, open trunk, money, and playing cards represent the transience of life.Unlike his peer Rembrandt, Bramer made very few prints; only one signed work survives. This still life, previously thought to have been etched by Bramer, is now believed to be after one of his lost paintings. A print tacked up onto the wall in a haphazard fashion serves to explain why so many prints from the 17th century have not survived to the present day.. Etching in black on cream laid paper .
