Life Boat Drill. One drill which no ship may neglect is the management of the life boat. In this picture crew members study the handling of the lifeboat as she rides on the davits, ready to be lowered. Each man has a particular duty to perform in connection with this operation. Proficiency is the watch-word. This scene was shot aboard the LS No. 407, whose home port is Portsmouth, Va. This vessel is named "Winter Quarter", indicating the shoals off the Virginia coast.

Scouting Mission in Greenland Waters. From the blue surface of a bay on the Greenland Coast, a U.S. Coast Guard seaplane takes off on a scouting mission. The fliers will find out "what's doing" beyond the iced ridges on the horizon. This picture is from a Kodachrome by the late Coast Guard Lt. Thomas S. La Farge, commanding officer of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Natsek, when that ship went down in the Atlantic. The lieutenant perished with his ship.
