One cook is cutting the large trays of savoury roll into squares, whilst other hold huge pans of freshly boiled potatoes. The chef has just cut a large square of cheese from a block on the worktop.

The Mint Is Stricking Sovereigns Again -- Mr. G. Foster, who was born in Barnsley and now lives in Clapham has been working in the Royal Mint for 16 years. He is examining some of the Sovereigns that have just come off his striking machine.The government's decision to repay in full the first installments on the Canadian and American loans has drawn attention to the art of striking sovereigns, for to meet these installments the country will have to draw upon its gold reserves. Although Sovereigns are no longer in circulation, the Royal mint continues to make some of them so that the ancient skills demanded in striking gold coins shall not be allowed to die out. A close up view of Mrs Day's shopping basket and gas mask case, which she has taken with her on her shopping trip. The gas mask case has a special pocket which enables it to be used like a handbag. Behind her, the greengrocer arranges his wares. This photograph was probably taken on the King's Road in Chelsea.
