No. 2 -- Jacob Djugashvilli sent a note to his father, Josef Stalin, soon after he became a prisoner of war. This was promptly photostated by the Germans before being routed through international diplomatic channels to the Kremlin. The Nazis then printed thousands of propaganda leaflets embodying Yasha's message: "Dear father: I am a POW, in good health. Will soon be transferred to one of the officers, camps in Germany. Treatment is good. Good health and regards to everyone." Striving to encourage surrenders by Red Army men, the Germans dropped the leaflets by air behind Red lines, pointing out that "if even such an outstanding Soviet officer and Red commander has surrendered, it proves clearly that any resistance against the German Army is useless." April 16, 1952.
