Charlton, of Durham, marking up issue of 6-inch shells in one of the huge bays.Deep underground, somewhere in England, so deep that neither temperature not humidity varies between summer and winter, the R.A.O.C. have a huge arsenal, where millions of shells are stacked in bays, and when wanted, are transported to the underground railhead, by means of miles of conveyor belting. Factory Welfare Work- Welfare at Pilkington's Glass Factory, St Helens, Lancashire, England, UK, 1944 Work in progress at a sheet glass factory, probably the Pilkington glass works at St Helens. A large sheet of glass is moved by a crane, but guided by hand by a worker on the ground. This piece of glass is being transferred following casting to the grinding machine which will grind and polish the glass.
