05/31/1918. The Submarine War. A British "Destroyer" arrives in English port with the survivors of several torpedoed ships.

The British Reoccupation of Hong Kong Some of the first batch of Japanese naval prisoners of war board the SS FORT BUFFALO, which will carry them home to Japan. The ship would then return with supplies for other prisoners of war still held in Hong Kong. Embarkation of the prisoners was supervised by men of 42 and 44 Royal Marine Commados.

The 1912 caption reads: USS Galena - one of the Three First Experiments in Federal Ironclads. USS Galenawas a wooden-hulled broadside ironclad built for the United States Navy during the American Civil War. The ship was initially assigned to the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron and supported Union forces during the Peninsula Campaign in 1862.

The Gallipoli Campaign, also known as the Dardanelles Campaign or the Battle of Gallipoli or the Battle of Çanakkale (Turkish: Çanakkale Savaşı), took place on the Gallipoli peninsula in the Ottoman Empire (now Gelibolu in modern day Turkey) between 25 April 1915 and 9 January 1916, during the First World War. A joint British and French operation was mounted to capture the Ottoman capital of Constantinople (Istanbul) and secure a sea route to Russia. The attempt failed, with heavy casualties on both sides. The campaign was considered one of the greatest victories of the Turks and was reflected on as a major failure by the Allies. The Gallipoli campaign resonated profoundly among all nations involved. In Turkey, the battle is perceived as a defining moment in the history of the Turkish peoplea final surge in the defence of the motherland as the ageing Ottoman Empire was crumbling. Boatload Of Germans Captured Off Greenland -- A boatload of Germans, one of here, is hauled aboard a Coast Guard ***** after the had scuttled their ship when overtaken by the American ship following a 70-mile chase through ice-choked waters off Greenland. In all, 28 Germans, eight of them officers, surrendered. in ten weeks of Greenland action, the Coast guard liquidated two Nazi Radio-weather stations took 60 prisoners, captured one trawler and forced the scuttling of another. Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener, KG, KP, GCB, OM, GCSI, GCMG, GCIE, PC ( 24 June 1850 - 5 June 1916) was an Anglo-Irish senior British Army officer and colonial administrator. On 5 June 1916, Kitchener was making his way to Russia on HMS Hampshire to attend negotiations with Tsar Nicholas II when in bad weather the ship struck a German mine 1.5 miles (2.4 km) west of Orkney, Scotland, and sank. Kitchener was among 737 who died

History From The Deep -- A grab bring timber from the "morning star" to the surface.Nearly 300 years ago, in 1658, the Swedish man-o-war "morning star" caught fire near Oresund, off the Danish coast, and was lost with all hands. This spring a Danish fishing boat came across the wreck of the "morning star". The discovery has led to the salvage of a great deal of interesting equipment. Timber, material from old uniforms, brass canons and the ship's bell have all been brought to the surface. Some of the items have been extraordinarily well preserved. For instance an old food box made out of pinewood and with its owner's initials carved on it is in as good condition as when the "morning star" went down. April 28, 1952. (Photo by Paul Popper).

On Sept., 1 the Australian Frigate, ***** accompanied by two P.T. boats, kept a ***** the Japanese off the coast of the Halmaheras, when Indian P.O.Ws. were handed over. These Indians were among those captured in Singapore. Of the 211 men in the original group, 44 died from various causes, 16 were beheaded by order of the camp commandant and eight escaped and are still back in the hills.The rescued men were in poor condition. U.S. Soldiers Return Home On The Queen Elizabeth - With her decks crowded with 13,113 American fighting men, the Queen Elizabeth, the world's largest ocean liner, steams up New York Bay on June 29, 1945. Among the homecoming troops aboard are 13,658 men of the U.S. Eighth Army Air Force and general hospital units, as well as 1,200 Navy men and 442 Army nurses. All are returning from the European theater of war, and many will soon see service in the Pacific. The 85,000-ton troop ship made her first voyage across the submarine-infested Atlantic in Larch, 1940. This is her first official visit to New York, since all previous trips were secret.
