Death Ship Towed To Shore -- The smoking hull of the ward luxury liner Morro Castle as it was towed to the shore and beached at Asbury Park, N.J., September 8. Fire of undetermined origin broke out early in the morning of September 8 and turned the ship into a blazing inferno. Passengers, Panic stricken, jumped overboard or were burned in their efforts to reach life boats. It was estimated that about 186 persons perished. August 09, 1934. Japanese Sheel Two British Warships - The gunboat "Bee".The British warships were shelled by Japanese field-gun batteries at Wuhu, south of besieged Nanking. The gunboat Ladybird was the victim of four direct hits, casualties being one killed and some injured. The gunboat Bee, flagship of our Yangtse fleet came under fire too as she was not hit. The Japanese state that it was a "mistake." December 13, 1937. (Photo by Topical Press).

The Royal Navy during the Second World War A drifter waiting alongside the AUTOCARRIER to take crews back to their ships in Scapa Flow. The cross-channel steamer AUTOCARRIER, which used to transport the cars of holiday makers to and from France before the Second World War, was now acting as a recreation ship for the crews of the many Home Fleet Auxiliary vessels which attended to the servicing needs of the Royal Navy. It is was the first and only one of its kind, and for thousands of Royal Navy men it means beer and cinema once a week.

Tugboat "Ljusne". Dimensions: 75.0´X 17.0´X 9.0´ feet. Machine: Shipyard Icy steam engine (18´'x 27´ ') at 45 NHK/180 IHK, replaced by an unknown 2cy compond steam engine of 312 IHK. Built in 1871 at Motala Mek. For Ljusne sawmill owners W. Kempe, Stockholm and cost SEK 48,000. In 1881 to Ljusne-Woxna AB. Sold in 1937 for SEK 10,000 to J. G. Forsner and J. E. Byström, Sundsvall who sold her to Dahlström, Lervik and changed its name to "Lervik". Sold for SEK 10,000 in 1940 to Rederi & Transport AB and was renamed "Helper III". The Stockviksverken bought the boat for SEK 5,000 in 1964, also sold the same year to F. Andersson, Sundsvall who used her as a steam center in the harbor. S. G. Göransson, Sundsvall bought her in 1970 the following year, she sank at Fillan's ferry location. Sundsvall city bought her for SEK 600 in 1971 who raised and scrapped her. Bogserbåten "Ljusne". Hmhs Maine Docked. Note: RFA Maine (1924), built 1925 as Leonardo da Vinci, was an Italian passenger ship captured at Massawa in 1941. Converted to Army Hospital Ship and renamed 'Empire Clyde' and operated by the British Army during World War II, she was transferred to the Royal Navy in 1945. Renamed RFA Maine in 1948, she served in the Korean War and was scrapped in 1954.

Cargo Liner Sinks Off Cork -- The P & O cargo liner Tresilian (7,373 tons) which sank in heavy seas in the St. George's Channel, 44 miles off Cork to-day (Tuesday). Survivors from the crew of about forty were picked up by three other ships which went to the aid of the liner. There were no passengers on Tresillian, which foundered after water had flooded the engine room. November 30,1954. (Photo by Reuterphoto).

Police Launch Halts Polish Vessel In Thames -- The scene at Woolwich Reach today as a police launch came alongside the 3,219 tons Polish steamer "Jaroslaw Dabrowski" to investigate the discovery of a stowaway on board. The United Kingdom Home Office had ordered the detention of the vessel "In order that immigration officials might board her". A stowaway - 24 year old Antoni Klimowicz - was found lying exhausted in the hold of the ship when stevedores came aboard. It is now reported that a Superintendent of Scotland Yard's Special Branch is among the British officials who have gone aboard the "Jaroslaw Dabrowski". July 31, 1954. (Photo by United Press Photo).
