"Semper Paratus" for Emergencies. Stowage arrangements in the new lifeboat approved by the Coast Guard have been studied and designed so that there is no void space in the boat 24' long, 8' wide, and 3'8 3/4" deep. It can carry 29 persons, in addition to 50 gallons of gasoline, 430 quarts of water, oars, sails, masts, food rations, tools, charts, signal devices, medical equipment, flashlight, antennae, compass, etc. These items are stored in water-tight compartments under the deck. The stern deck compartment is designed for quick access by the officer-in-charge and for the stowage of small emergency articles. The gasoline tank is also in the stern, and the four water tanks are under the side benches. An additional stowage locker is located in the bow.

SS ANDREA DORIA in Final Stage of Sinking. The death of the SS ANDREA DORIA is almost complete as the sea swallows all but part of the stern. An empty lifeboat drifts aimlessly, a small relic of the Italian 656-foot luxury liner. Her tragic ending was the result of a collision with the Swedish liner SS STOCKHOLM in fog approximately 205 miles east of New York, 55 miles south of Nantucket Island on July 25, 1956. Participants in rescue operations included the SS CAPE ANN, SS ILE de FRANCE, U.S. Coast Guard cutters and seaplanes and helicopters, and U.S. Air Force helicopters. The ANDREA DORIA carried 1,000 passengers and 500 crew members.
