A Great Splash By The British Jeep -- Indian And Pakistan Defence Chiefs Watch -- Being demonstrated over rough ground at Bagshot, Surrey, is the new British Jeep, similar in function to the American Jeep but with an improved all-round performance. It has high cross-country mobility and can land from assault craft- the engine continuing to run while under water. It has a four-cylinder 80 horse-power engine.The demonstration was watch by British Government officials and "defence" chiefs from India and Pakistan. The new jeep will probably be available to India, Pakistan and other countries for local manufacture. July 26, 1950. (Photo by Paul Popper Ltd.).

Known to the central Siamese as the Lao States at the turn of the 20th century, the northern region of what is now Thailand was an independent region known as the Lanna kingdom. The main city, Chiang Mai, was built in 1296 by King Mengrai. The city was abandoned in 1776 91 due to Burmese invasions, but became an acknowledged part of Siam around the same time. The north was linked to Bangkok only by river, a journey which could take some six months, until in 1922, a railway was completed that connected Bangkok and Chiang Mai.

A jeep negotiates a "corduroy" road across a swamp. The only successful way of building a road in this type of country. The road is made by placing coconut logs across the swamp, and need constant attention. May 11, 1944.
