Goodbye Grock -- Surrounded by flowers from well-wishers, Grock hands over the key of his circus to his colleague Kurt Collien.Dr. Adrian Wettack, otherwise Grock, the greatest of clowns, gave his last performance on Sunday at Hamburg in the circus which he helped to form there since the war.Although Grock is immortal, Dr. Wettack is 74, and has retired twice before, he declares that he will not play again ... his final performance had all the Brilliant of his masterly art ... the vast feather Suitace, the Miniature Fiddie, the Piano, chair, Etc. German Communist Leader Attacks West -- Otto Grotewohl addressing the meeting of 2,500 communists at the Lening memorial day gathering.Otto Grotewohl, Germany's number-two communist leader, spurned the conciliatory tone adopted recently by other European communist leaders and made a bitter attack on the western world, at a Lenin memorial meeting held in Friedrichstadtpalast in the Russian sector of Berlin. In criticizing almost every aspect of the western Allied occupation of Germany Grotewohl declared that "Struggling capitalism is taking refuge in another war". January 23, 1949.

Carl Brisson - The idol of cafe matrons is an ex-boxing champ.When Carl Brisson was middle-weight boxing champion of Europe in 1923, sports writers called him the "prettiest man in the ring." Today the blue-eyed, dimpled Dane is as striking in tails and top hat as he once was in trunks. And he employs his ring-learned agility in putting over a song. He climbs on the night club furniture, on the piano, on the spectator's laps. For these hijinks with the audience he is sometimes called the male Hildegarde. Three years ago, Brisson thought he was through. For 15 years he'd been successful in operetta and movies in Europe and the U.S., then he lost everything when the Germans invaded Denmark.
