Zatopek Wins 10,000 Metres And Gains First 1952 Olympics Gold Medal -- Emil Zatopek, the flying Czech Army major, leading A. Mimoun, of France, who was second, in the last lap of the gruelling 10,000 metres in the Olympic Games here. Shaking off the challenge by the Frenchman, Zatopek covered the distance in 29 minutes and 17 seconds. His time knocks 42.6 seconds off the record he set up at Wembley in 1948 and was only 14.4 seconds slower than his own world record made in his own country two yea

Runners refused to compete during the hottest part of the day.Several were exhausted when the race was run four hours later than scheduled. Winner Dave Stephens, of Victoria (below), had to be reprimanded for his conduct during the race.Stephens passed remarks criticising officials in the early stages of the event.After the race he was most outspoken in his criticism. Zatopek Wins 5,000 Metres - And Sets Up New Games Record -- E. Zatopek, of Czechoslovakia, winning the 5,000 metres event at the European Games here. With a new Games championship time of 14 minutes, 3seconds, he was about a hundred yards ahead of A. Mimoun (France), who came second. Third was the Belgian Gaston Reiff, who defeated the Czech at Wembley in the 1948 Olympic Games. August 27, 1950.

Zatopek Wins Marathon: Sets Record -- Zatopek the Gret of Czechoslovakia, smiles with pleasure as he breasts the tape to win the Olympic marathon-and to win his third Olympic Gold Medal this year. With a time of two hours, 23-minutes, 3.2 seconds, he set up, a new Olympic record for the gruelling event. July 28, 1952.

Back To The Track - After 5 Years Of War.E. McDonald Bailey, (polytechnic Harriers), of Trinidad, winning the final of the 220 yards in 22.7 seconds. He, too, has a very relaxed style, somewhat reminiscent of Jesse Owens, - and British athletes are hoping that eventually he will prove the equal of that great American runner.A little tired after six years of war, maybe, without the right amounts of the right kinds of food, without much chance of training during their service with the Armed Forces, British amateur athletes have still to stage a come-back.Amateur athletic clubs from all over the country recently entered teams for a meeting at Chiswick, London organised by the Polytechnic Harriers, - one of the oldest London athletic clubs. All types of events were included, - everything from putting the weight to a marathon race, and several records were equalled, if not broken. June 15, 1946.
