The Royal Navy 1899 - 1902 Royal Navy bluejackets of HMS Terrible pose by an armoured train at Durban during the Boer War. Mounted on the flatbed carriage is an improvised signal lamp consisting of a searchlight and shutter mechanism, powered by a dynamo attached to the train. The officer to the right of the image is possibly Capt Percy Scott RN. The tower of Durban Post Office can be seen in the background.

The 1896 caption reads: 'Scene at Station on Pennsylvania Railroad as Garfield ambulance Train passed on its way to Elberon. On September 6th, the President was removed to Elberon, NJ, in a specially designed car, the bed being arranged so as to minimize jolting, It was an extremely hot day and the train went very fast, the President sending a message to the engineer to increase the speed. At the stations and in the fields, knots of people congregate to watch the passage of the train, instinctively removing their hats as it came into sight.' James Abram Garfield (1831-1881) was elected the 20th President of the United States in 1880. He was constantly harassed by people seeking jobs and was shot by one on July 2, 1881. He died on September 19.

The station was opened for traffic in 1872. In 1902, new station house was built and the railway farm was expanded. The station house was replaced with a new one in the 1950s. Inauguration party 1902.
