Close-Helmet for the Tournament on Foot ca. 1600-1610 the Master of the Castle Mark Italian This helmet comes from a garniture made by the Maestro dal Castello (Master of the Castle), so named for the castle mark found at the top of the breastplate on this and other examples of his work. He was probably a follower of the great Milanese armorer Pompeo della Cesa (recorded 1572-1593). Among the patrons of the Maestro dal Castello were the dukes of Savoy and King Philip III of Spain. Ruiter helmet associated with the armor, presumably worn by Den Ridder Pankraz von Freyberg. Ruiter helmet or jacket helmet with a double visor. The right side of the lower viewplate has air holes that consist of a rectangle that is awarded on both side with a circle. In total there are 7 of such decorations. With push buttons, both visors can be kept up. The helmet has a comb. The lining is largely present and probably nineteenth century. The arcated necklag cover consists of two parts, the lower is deposited with a cable decoration.

The armorers of Innsbruck, capital of the Austrian Tirol, thrived under the patronage of the Habsburg court and produced armor that was internationally renowned for the strength of its steel and the beauty of its form. Located near the border between Austria and Italy, this center produced armor that reflected the influence of north and south, combining the elongated and spiky German Gothic style with that of the rounded and more robust forms preferred in Renaissance Italy.. Among ancient helmets, the Chalcidian type is varied, widespread, and comparatively unrestrictive, with relatively wide openings for the eyes and ears. This example, probably made in the Black Sea region or even further east, features a pointed noseguard, high carinated crown, molded brow ridge, and everted rear flange, plus large separately made hinged cheekpieces. The tinned bronze surface is almost silver in color, with extensive decoration including small incised linked scrolls and much larger embossed linked scrolls. Chalcidian Helmet, c. 350-200 BCE. Arm harness for left arm, c. 1525 - c. 1575 Arm cover, arm harness for left arm, iron, white, consists of an upper arm pipe, an elbow pipe and a forear pipe. The edges are surrounded. On the upper arm pipe a pointed pin and a leather belt. There are decorations around the upper arm pipe in a wide strip that runs down. The elbow pipe is decorated and riveted rivets on the upper arm pipe and the forear pipe. Two hinges have been applied to the forearm pipe so that the lower part can be removed. The quality of its construction and decoration indicates that it was probably intended for an officer. Infantry armed with swords, pikes, or handguns played an increasingly important role in military tactics throughout the sixteenth century.The decoration of this armor typifies that used most frequently in Italy from about 1550 to about 1590. Close Helmet for the Tourney Made 1570-1590 Augsburg. This helmet was used in the sport of the tourney, a mock battle on horseback or on foot. To protect against dangerous trusts entering under the helmetís neck plates, the helmetís collar is designed to rotate on a rim that closes over the separate gorget or neck defense. Though this allowed for some lateral head movement, it was a more restrictive alternative to the overlapping plates on close helmets for the field of battle.The upper visor is reinforced with an additional plate to deflect strikes from a lance or sword. This reinforce was repaired with a riveted and braised patch covering the left visor pivot; together, with sword cuts over the comb or center ridge of the helmet, this repair suggests this piece received some heavy use.. Sallet ca. 1470-80 Italian, Milan The term sallet (from the Italian celata) is applied to a wide variety of fifteenth-century helmets that have open faces or, if visored, leave the lower face and neck exposed. This tall form of sallet is typically Italian and is sometimes referred to as a barbute. It is struck twice on the right side at the back with the same armorer's mark: two Gothic letters ("SS" or "SZ") beneath a split-legged cross. Struck on the right cheek is the lion of Saint Mark, a control mark that perhaps denotes the helmet's former presence in the Venice arsenal.. Sallet 25391

Close Helmet with Mask Visor in Form of a Human Face ca. 1515 Attributed to Kolman Helmschmid German Helmets fitted with masklike visors were a popular German and Austrian fashion about 1510 to 1540. With their visors forged and embossed as humorous or grotesque human masks, such helmets were often worn in tournaments held during the exuberant pre-Lenten (Shrovetide) festivals, celebrations somewhat akin to the modern Mardi Gras. The front is round -shaped but runs wide to the sides, a double row of white rivets with a roasted edge are located over the entire width of the VO0rkant, the bottom edge is tilted. The rear is more rectangular but walks around to the sides, the bottom is flanging. The main opening is round with a cabled rim. The inside is painted black. Burgonet for the Guard of the Counts Khevenhüller zu Aichelberg ca. 1580 German The acorn and oak leaves embossed on the sides of the bowl are emblems of the noble Austrian family Khevenhüller zu Aichelberg (Aichel is German for "acorn"). A series of "black-and-white" armors mounted with similarly decorated burgonets or morions is preserved in the family's castle of Hochosterwitz, near Klagenfürt, in the Austrian state of Carinthia.Large numbers of standardized armors decorated with raised and brightly polished bands set off by the black-painted recessed surfaces were made for the German infantry (Landesknechte) in the second half of the sixteenth century. The majority were fabricated in Nuremberg, though similar harnesses were also made in the north (in the region of Brunswick) and even in Innsbruck. The phrase "O 'Ali" in the center is bordered by the following inscription: "There is no hero or man like 'Ali; there is no sword like Dhu'l Fiqar. Help from Allah and a speedy victory." Islamic arms and armor commonly feature pious inscriptions in strategic places to protect vulnerable parts of the body such as the face and vital organs. Armor of Infante Luis, Prince of Asturias (1707-1724) dated 1712 Signature probably refers to Jean Drouart French Possibly the last royal armor made in Europe, this is believed to have been presented to the five-year-old Infante Luis (1707-1724), prince of Asturias, by his great-grandfather Louis XIV of France (1638-1715, reigned from 1643). Luis was the first Spanish-born Bourbon heir to the throne of Spain and ruled briefly as Luis I in 1724. The armor is signed and dated on the backplate Drouar Ordinaire du Roi aux Heaume à Paris 1712 (Drouar, armorer-in-ordinary to the king, at the sign of the helm, in Paris, 1712). The signature probably refers to Jean Drouart (died before October 1715), a royal armorer. Drouart was one of the last practicing armorers active in France by 1712. Remarkable for the state of its preservation, the armor retains its lustrous blue and gold surfaces and nearly all the original red silk lining. Tournament Helm ca. 1510-20 Anglo-Flemish Helms bolted to the breast- and backplate and having large visors with multiple apertures for maximum sight and ventilation were typically used both in the tourney and in foot combat. The former was a mock combat fought by groups of mounted contestants armed with lances and rebated swords or clubs; in the latter, two armored contestants fought on foot within a wooden enclosure, the favored weapons usually being polaxes or swords, their strokes carefully monitored by referees. This helm bears faint traces of a mark, an M surmounted by a crescent, which is thought to be that of Guillem Margot (active in Brussels, recorded 1505-20). The same mark appears on three other elements of armor in the Metropolitan Museum: an armet (acc. no. 29.158.52); and elbow defense, or couter (acc. no. 29.158.1h, where it is struck twice); and the front half of a tournament helm (acc. no. 14.25.572).. Infantry Garniture of a Target (Shield) and Pointed Morion Made 1570-1585 Milan. Matched round shields with open-faced helmets formed essential equipment for noble field commanders; in addition to providing protection, these served as a sign of rank. This heavy shield (target) and helmet (morion) were intended to defend against gunfire and blows from swords and pikes. Remarkably, they retain their original silk linings and fringe, decorative features that also muffled clanging blows. reconstruction of the Sutton Hoo helmet, a decorated Anglo-Saxon helmet discovered during the 1939 excavation of the Sutton Hoo ship-burial. Buried around 625 AD. it is believed to have been the helmet of King Raedwald; for whom its elaborate decoration may have given it a secondary function almost akin to a crown.
