King David Receiving the Cistern Water of Bethlehem 1505-1525 Belgium. This scene and that of King Solomon Receiving the Queen of Sheba are particularly fine examples of the decorative style practiced in Antwerp by a group of largely anonymous artists now dubbed Antwerp Mannerists. The paintings originally formed the interior of the wings of a folding triptych with the Adoration of the Magi as its center. Both show gifts being presented to a ruler on his throne and would have been understood as Old Testament prefigurations of the submission of the nations to Christ as king, the theme of the lost Adoration panel. They also provided an excuse for the artist to depict exotic costumes, architecture, and luxury goodsó the hallmarks of the Antwerp Mannerist style.. Oil on panel, transferred to canvas . This chromolithograph shows the French king Louis XIII at age 16, when he took control of the country as king. He is the figure in the yellowish outfit, with a plumed hat, at the top of the stairs. Louis had ascended the throne as a minor, in 1610, and so his mother, Marie de' Medici, ruled as regent. He turned 13 in 1614, but Marie continued as regent and ruler til 1617, when Louis at age 16, with his supporters, overthrew his mother and her supporters. This lithograph is by Crispin de Pas, a well-known Dutch publisher and engraver who died in 1637.

Christopher Columbus (c. 31 October 1451-20 May 1506) was a navigator, colonizer, and explorer from Genoa, Italy, whose voyages across the Atlantic Ocean led to general European awareness of the American continents in the Western Hemisphere. With his four voyages of exploration and several attempts at establishing a settlement on the island of Hispaniola, all funded by Isabella I of Castile, he initiated the process of Spanish colonization which foreshadowed general European colonization of the 'New World'. Isabella I (22 April 1451-26 November 1504) was Queen of Castile and Leà¸£à¸n.

The Order of the Garter is the oldest national order of knighthood in continuous existence. It includes the ruling monarch of Great Britain and not more than 25 full members. The monarch alone grants membership. King Edward is said to have founded the Order in 1348 as a "society, fellowship, and college of knights." There are tales of its origin. The one depicted here in this 1915 illustration shows the Countess of Salisbury (may have been Joan of Kent) dancing with (or perhaps near) King Edward at Eltham Palace. This painting by P.P. Rubens (1577-1640) shows King Henry IV (died of France and his wife Maria de Medici (died 1642). Here we see the king just before his departure to the war against Germany. It is housed in the Louvre in Paris. This one is titled Consignment of the Regency and is part of the Henry IV Cycle that was commissioned by Marie de Medici. Here, Henry IV entrusts Marie with both the regency of France and the care of the dauphin shortly before his war campaigns and eventual death. To the right of Marie is the figure Prudence.

According to Egyptian mythology, during the reign of Ramesses III (c. 1200 B.C.) , Ramesses was traveling and surveying his lands - most likely in Syria. The rulers of the various lands under his control and the leaders of those that were allied with him, sent him gifts. By far, the best was the gift of the Prince of the land of Bekhten - his daughter. This 1915 illustration by American artist Evelyn Paul shows the princess being brought to Ramesses. Ramesses does take her back to Egypt and she becomes the Great Royal Wife.

On the left, an arm labelled 'Home Riots' reaches through the curtains with a torch to ignite a bomb labelled 'Anarchy' next to the throne.
