Rigging -- Painters rig own stages, using tested manila rope or wire. here have been no fatalities through failure of painting gear since bridge opened in 1932. A fine record. Few of the thousands of people who daily cross Sydney's gigantic Harbor Bridge realise that above their heads, like spiders in a huge web, swing the men of the bridge painting gang. Except in wet or windy weather, when they work under cover, these men paint steadily on until they have laid more than 800 gallons of first-grade paint upon the 50,000 tons of steel work. Then they start all over again to spread the next coat! It takes six years to paint the bridge completely, although spot-painting goes on all the time. September 03, 1952.
