General William Tecumseh Sherman 1888, cast 1910 Augustus Saint-Gaudens American According to Saint-Gaudens, this bust of General William Tecumseh Sherman (1830-1891) was modeled during eighteen visits, each lasting about two hours. The sculptor depicted Sherman exactly as he appeared during the sittingswith his deeply creased brow, stubbly beard, and unbuttoned collar. The success of this portrait left Saint-Gaudens well poised to win a commission in 1892 for an equestrian monument honoring Sherman. Sir Francis Chantrey (1781-1841) Bust of William Stuart, Archbishop of Armagh, signed and dated 1828. William Stuart died in 1822 and two years later his son commissioned this classically influenced bust. It is a good example of Chantrey's skill in carving drapery. Marble, London.

Samuel Gray Ward 1881, cast 1908 Augustus Saint-Gaudens American Although the circumstances leading to Saint-Gaudens' modeling of Samuel Gray Ward's likeness are not known, this bas-relief was one of the sculptor's earliest portrait commissions. Ward (1817-1907) was a founder of the Metropolitan Museum and its first treasurer. Over his long lifetime, he cultivated myriad artistic and literary interests while working as a financier. He was an intimate of Ralph Waldo Emerson and his circle, and an enthusiastic patron of the arts, particularly prints. Of the more than eighty reliefs Saint-Gaudens completed, he considered Ward's portrait one of his finest efforts. The sense that the sculptor's clay approaches the immediacy of paint is particularly evident in the richly mottled texture of Ward's jacket and in the wiry bristles of his beard and mustache. Henry Clay 1858 Thomas Ball American Encouraged by the commercial success of his "Daniel Webster" statuette (69.219.2), Ball modeled "Henry Clay" in Boston as a companion piece." By pairing Webster and Clay, Ball was alluding to their foremost roles in the negotiation of national compromise in the pre-Civil War era. Clay (1777-1852) held many offices on the federal level during his long career and came out of retirement in 1850 to orchestrate the Compromise of 1850, an effort to prevent open hostilities between the North and the South over the expansion of slavery. Ball strove for a realistic representation of Clay, but he never saw him in person, and so relied on photographs and other images of the sitter. Ball posed Clay in contemporary dress and in a modified contrapposto stance. He grasps a rolled document in his hands and looks to his left. Scottish-born steel magnate Andrew Carnegie was an admirer of Burns and, aware of Calverleys statue, commissioned from him a life-size bust of the poet for his library. Cleisthenes (also Clisthenes or Kleisthenes) was a noble Athenian of the Alcmaeonid family. He is credited with reforming the constitution of ancient Athens and setting it on a democratic footing in 508/7 BCE. For these accomplishments, historians refer to him as 'The Father of Athenian Democracy'. He was the maternal grandson of the tyrant Cleisthenes of Sicyon, as the younger son of the latter's daughter Agariste and her husband Megacles. Also, he was credited for increasing powers of assembly and he also broke up the power of the nobility of Athens.
