Tiraz Textile Fragment ca. 991-1031 Inscribed textiles are called tiraz, from the Persian word for "embroidery." Many were produced in royal workshops and presented by rulers to honor courtiers and officials at formal ceremonies. They bear inscriptions naming and blessing the current ruler or caliph - a reminder to the recipient that they owed their allegiance to that ruler. This white linen textiles dramatic inscription is embroidered in black silk. It reads: "Bismallah (In the Name of God). Praise be to God, the Lord of the worlds, and a good end to those who fear God. And God bless Muhammad the seal of the Prophets, and all his family, the Good, the excellent. Blessing from God and glory to the Caliph, the servant of God, Abul 'Abbas Ahmad, al-Qadir billah, Commander of the Faithful, may God glorify him and…". Tiraz Textile Fragment 455296

Tiraz Fragment late 10th century The painted decoration of this cotton fragment imitates more luxurious examples that are embroidered with silk. The inscription reads "perfect blessing" and the final letter of the word baraka (blessing) extends to punctuate another series of repetitions created in the zone above the main inscription. Unlike the silk-embroidered caliphal inscriptions that proclaim lofty political statements and benedictions, the painted versions bear inscriptions expressing simple blessings for the owner. Such textiles were probably produced in commercial workshops for markets in Baghdad and surrounding areas.. Tiraz Fragment 448609

Manuscript of the Qur'an Manuscript of the Qur'an, A.H. 889/1484 C.E. Ink, opaque watercolors, and gold on paper, Paper: 3 3/4 x 3 3/4 in. (9.5 x 9.5 cm). The patron who commissioned this manuscript of the Quran spared no expense—from the first few folios, replete with lush illumination, to the binding, elaborately engraved with the Chinese-inspired lotus blossoms and cloud bands common to the art of the Timurid dynasty in Iran and Central Asia. The second and third pages displayed here feature intricate vegetal ornamentation in gold on a background of cobalt blue, both materials prized for their value and beauty. The right-hand page contains the Arabic text of the Qurans first sura, or chapter, which plays a part in many Muslims daily lives; the following chapter begins on the left. The script is known as ghubar, which literally means “dust,” because the letters were thought to be as minute as grains of powder. Coptic Liturgical Codex 17th-18th century Wealthier monasteries would have possessed manuscripts even after the Arab conquest of the region in the mid-600s. Coptic, the latest stage of the Egyptian language, is written with the Greek alphabet, supplemented by seven additional signs. The Arabic text to the right side of each page was for the use of those who no longer easily read Coptic. Crosses worked in interlaced geometric patterns often appear in Coptic manuscripts.. Illustrated Diary 1888 Kawanabe Kyōsai Japanese The painter and print artist Kawanabe Kyōsai kept careful records of various painting commissions he carried out. Several volumes survive in the Kawanabe Kyōsai Museum and at the National Diet Library, both in Tokyo. During the years between March 1887 and the last month of 1889 he used the same type of paper as seen in the Metropolitans example. He printed himself the frames for each page and the cartouche in blue ink, and then wrote in the details in ink and sometimes applied hand stamps for certain regular clients. The Mets example is created for a February, but the year is not indicated. Yet, from other surviving records, we know that on February 5, 12, 19, and 26 of 1888, Kyōsai visited the architect Josiah Conder to give him lessons in sketches. We can assume that he had used the precut stamp of Captain Brinkley (ブレンキ君), a foreigner to signal his visits to Conders home, as he had done on other occasions. It was known that he regu

Bifolium from the "Nurse's Qur'an" (Mushaf al-Hadina) ca. A.H. 410/ A.D. 1019-20 This double-page from a Qur'an comes down to us with the fascinating information that the nursemaid to one of the Zirid rulers of North Africa commissioned it for donation to the Great Mosque of Qairawan. It is written in a form of the 'new style kufic' script that was unique to North Africa, and it was copied on parchment, which remained in use in this region long after paper was commonly used for Qur'ans from Egypt, Iraq or Iran.. The Dunhuang map or Dunhuang Star map is one of the first known graphical representations of stars from ancient Chinese astronomy, dated to the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Before this map, much of the star information mentioned in historical Chinese texts had been questioned. The map provides a graphical verification of the star observations, and are part of a series of pictures on one of the Dunhuang manuscripts. The Dunhuang Star map is to date the world's oldest complete preserved star atlas.
