Mantle, 20th century, 43 1/2 x 36 1/4 in. (110.5 x 92.1 cm) (irregular), Wool, Bolivia, 20th century, Worn by both men and women, mantles have a long history of providing extra warmth in the Andean highlands. Still popular today among Quechua women, mantles continue to convey long-standing symbols of gender and rank. Women wear the mantle across their back, draping it over their shoulders like a shawl. They fasten it together in the front using a pin called a tupuitself a symbol of status and prestige. While mantle sizes typically vary by region, their construction is fairly consistent. Mantles are woven in two separate pieces, and when joined together, the completed garment contains wide patterned stripes across a solid-color background. When draped across the back, the stripes appear horizontally, a distinctly feminine style.

Noh costume (chōken), 19th century, Unknown Japanese, Silk, Japan, 19th century, The Japanese evolved the stately Noh drama during the 14th and 15th centuries under the patronage of their aristocratic warrior rulers. Noh actors used poetic language, slow, stylized movements, masks, and resplendent costumes to create a dream-like atmosphere based on the ideal of yugen, or 'mysterious beauty.' While actors first wore garments given to them by their princely patrons, by the end of the 16th century a specialized industry arose that supplied the great variety of costumes needed for the fully developed Noh theater.

Noh Robe (Karaori) with Tortoise Shell Pattern and Crane Lozenges first half of the 19th century Japan The auspicious combination of crane and tortoise motifs has long been a staple of Japanese decoration. Here it is elegantly stylized in lozenge-shaped confronting pairs of cranes on a ground motif of interlocking hexagons representing the tortoiseshell. Blouse late 19th century Indian Used as direct inspiration for two Jessie Franklin Turner designs in this collection from the 1920s (see 2009.300.336a, b and 2009.300.1355), this blouse is a wonderfully clear and well-documented example of how designers used Brooklyn Museum material to inspire design. During her early design career, Turner often worked with Stewart Culin, the Brooklyn Museum's Curator of Ethnology until 1929, to find material at the museum that would spark design. Culin also partnered with M.D.C. Crawford to encourage a mutually beneficial relationship between museums and industry, and Crawford sometimes lent objects from his personal collection, such as this piece, to that end. Turner was inspired by this exact blouse to create dresses with the bird motif, which has become iconic of her work. Crawford wrote about this interaction in Women's Wear in 1919, The Ways of Fashion in 1941 and featured drawings of both the blouse and a version of the dress produced from it in
