Post-medieval: Sculpture and ceramics from local workshops (2nd half 12th century; Sienese maiolica; 14th century weapons German-born photographer and scholar Max Hutzel (1911-1988) photographed in Italy from the early 1960s until his death. The result of this project, referred to by Hutzel as Foto Arte Minore, is thorough documentation of art historical development in Italy up to the 18th century, including objects of the Etruscans and the Romans, as well as early Medieval, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. Images are organized by geographic region in Italy, then by province, city, site complex and monument.

Accessories. Fans, parasols, opera gloves, fashionable hats, small toques garnished with feathers, wristwatches, compact bracelets, and luxuriously crafted lighters: there was a dazzling variety of accessories in the 1920s. Small bags could be suspended from a belt, or a glove. Walking sticks and the shafts of umbrellas and parasols were often embellished with carving clearly inspired by African and Indian art. And Russian influence was evident when it came to combs made of mother-of-pearl and ivory.

Upright Europe (represented by the woman (as Europa) on left) to a youthful and confident Japan (the central figure): "Your old neighbour (an unflatteringly-depicted China on right, seemlingly bowed but with bloodied dagger drawn) who always has a way to receive visitors, seems unable to take tea with us!" A satirical view of China's reticence to European and Japanese incursions into Manchuria during the early years of the 20th century. Date: 1902
