Tympanum with a Horse and Rider second half 14th century This tympanum once adorned the facade of the socalled House of Ahmad and Ibrahim located in the town of Kubachi in the Caucasus. The vegetal decoration surrounding the central figure has been compared to fourteenth- and fifteenth-century stone carvings found in the city. The date is further supported by the dress of the lively rider. His costume incorporates a curvilinear "cloud collar" around its neckline, which was introduced to Iran by the Mongols and became fashionable in the fifteenth century.. Architectural roundel with radiating palmettes ca. 6th century A.D. Sasanian When this wheel-shaped window was excavated at the site of Maaridh II in the Ctesiphon area, it was in pieces, indicating that it fell from a height. It is decorated on only one side, with palmettes forming spokes that connect an inner and an outer ring of beads. Based on round windows found at contemporary monuments in Syria, the decorated side of the window may have faced outward. The occurrence of such windows at Ctesiphon provides evidence of the exchange of artistic ideas between Mesopotamia and the eastern Mediterranean.The city of Ctesiphon was located on the east bank of the Tigris River, 20 miles (32 km) south of modern Baghdad in Iraq. Panel (one of a pair) ca. 1730 French This pair of panels display symmetrical carving of scrolling acanthus leaves, C and inverted C scrolls as well as vines winding around an upright molding of tied fasces. A radiating star is carved near the top of each panel and the interlaced letters A and M, for Ave Maria (Hail Mary), on the lower half which strongly suggests an ecclesiastical context. Once painted and part of a larger decorative ensemble, these pieces were among the model collection of woodwork, paneling and seat furniture of Maison Leys, a successful decorating business, located at the Place de la Madeleine in Paris. Since 1885 the business was directed by Georges Hoentschel who installed the collection in 1903 in a museum-like display at Boulevard Flandrin, Paris. Three years later, Hoentschel sold the collection to J. Pierpont Morgan who gave the panels with the rest of the decorators seventeenth and eighteenth century objects to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1907.. Panel

Scarab Inscribed for the God's Wife Hatshepsut ca. 1479-1458 B.C. New Kingdom This scarab was found in a foundation deposit associated with Hatshepsut's funerary temple at Deir el-Bahri. The base is inscribed with her personal name, Hatshepsut ("foremost of noblewomen") linked with the title God's Wife. Hatshepsut inherited the title while she served as principal queen of her half-brother, Thutmose II. Later in her life, after taking on the titles of King, Hatshepsut passed the title to her daughter, Neferure (see scarab 27.3.326)..
