The legend of Gyda says that Gyda was born about 852 in Hordaland. She was the daughter of Eirik, King of Hordaland one of the petty kings of pre-united Norway. Gyda was proposed to by Harold Fairhair who was then the king of the petty kingdom of Vestfold. She refused to marry Harald until he ruled as king over all of Norway. Harald was therefore induced to take a vow not to cut nor comb his hair until he was sole king of Norway. In 872 Harald became king of a united Norway and sent for Gyda.

Depicted in this drawing of the central figures of the West Gable or Pediment of the Temple of the goddess Aphaia on the island of Aegina. The ancient Greeks associated Aphaia with fertility and agriculture. In time, she came to be identified with the goddess Athena and also with the goddess Artemis. Here Aphaia is seen standing above a fallen Greek warrior, most likely Ajax.

This scene is one of several designs that the English sculptor and draughtsman John Flaxman (1755-1826) did to illustrate passages from the Greek epic poet Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, a commission he had been given by Georgiana Hare-Naylor while he was living in Rome. It represents the gods descending to battle. It was done 1793.

Zephyrus was the gentlest of the winds and considered a harbinger of springtime. He was pictured with flowers that indicated a mild light breeze. Eurus, or Euros, was the god of the east wind. The folds of his clothes suggested heavy clouds. The Greeks honored eight wind gods. The other four were Boreas (cold north wind), Kaikias (northeast wind), Notos (south wind), and Skiron (northwest wind).
