Bibi Lalouette 1859 James McNeill Whistler American This curly-haired little boy sitting on the edge of a bed comes from a series of portraits that Whistler made in 1858-59. Known by the pet name of Bibi, the child was son to J. M. Lalouette who ran a small hotel and restaurant at 5 rue de l'Odéon in Paris. Whistler often ate there and left a large unpaid bill when he moved to London. In August 1860 he sent partial payment, eliciting a relieved response from Monsieur Lalouette that mentions Bibi often talked of the artist, and noting the family's pride in their own impression of the present work. As in portrayals of his Haden nephews and niece, Whistler focused on his subject's features and barely indicated setting. A black cap resting on the counterpane functions as a visual punctuation point to balance the child's head. Ghostly forms below indicate that an earlier image was burnished away. Man and Apparition 1830-44 Theodor Richard Edward von Holst Romantic literary and fantastic subjects predominate in Von Holsts oeuvre, derived from authors such as Virgil, Dante, Shakespeare, and Victor Hugo. He turned most often to Goethes Faust, and the present image may represent an imagined visit from Gretchen's ghost to the guilt-wracked Faust.Von Holsts precocious talent was recognized by Thomas Lawrence, who bought a drawing from the youth when the latter was ten years old. After taking lessons from Henry Fuseli, Von Holst entered the Royal Academy Schools at the age of fourteen in 1824. Fuseli remained a strong influence stylistically and the works of the two artists have often been confused. In 1959, an album assembled by John Welch Etherington Rolls (1807-1870) appeared at auction containing drawings by both artists, and subsequent research allowed a core group to be securely ascribed to Von Holst, the present sheet among them.. Study of a Woman and Child 1745-92 Sir Joshua Reynolds British The woman's seated pose is remarkably dynamic: as she turns to gaze over her shoulder, curls tumble from her coiffure, and folds of drapery spill across her lap, revealing slender legs crossed at the ankles. By contrast to the careful articulation of her face, her fingers are only schematically indicated, while the contours of the child's naked body are succinctly described in short strokes of black chalk. This rare compositional study by Sir Joshua Reynolds--the leading British portrait painter of the eighteenth century, first president of the Royal Academy, an influential theoretician of art, and a distinguished collector--is not related to any known painting. But its allusion to the Madonna and Child, and severely classicizing, Michelangelesque style link it to the artist's most accomplished grand-manner portraits of the 1770s..
