Made originally as a petronel pistol, this firearm seems to have been refitted with a new stock sometime during the 17th century to convert it into a rifle, most likely for a child's use.

Pair of flintlock pistols. Jan Knoop of Utrecht was one of the leading late 17th-century Dutch gunmakers. Written on the signboard of his house in Utrecht was De gecroonde franse pistolen’ (The Crowned French Pistols’), indicating that he followed the French style. The man in a chariot on the lockplate is a motif that often appears on firearms by Utrecht gunmakers, as does the mask on the barrel.

Flintlock Pistol ca. 1770 Probably James Grice This pistol features a two stage, engraved brass barrel, engraved steel lock, and brass mounts with a trophy of arms adorning the pommel. The Grice family of gunmakers was based in Birmingham but marked some of their products as having been made in London, presumably to capitalize on that citys prestige as one of the most important centers of gunmaking in Europe.. Wheellock Pistol ca. 1590 German The cherry stock of this wheellock pistol is inlaid with engraved staghorn and features an elongated hexagonal pommel perforated on each side with an oval aperture. Behind the barrel tang a small staghorn plaque is engraved with the letters CN. The barrel tang is marked with the number 6. The rifled barrel is marked at the breech with the letters LR, and forward of this it is struck with what appears to be the arms of Schenken von Limpurg, who held the hereditary office of Imperial Cupbearer.. Gunsmith: Jacob Kuntz (American, Allentown, Pennsylvania 1780-1876 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania). Date: ca. 1810-15.This is a classic example of a Pennsylvania longrifle, a uniquely American type of firearm popularly known as a Kentucky rifle. It was probably made around the time that Kuntz moved from Northampton County, Pennsylvania, to Philadelphia. The restrained Rococo carving of the wood and the confident treatment of the engraved brass demonstrate the skills that distinguish Kuntz as one of the finest gunmakers of the period. Pair of Flintlock Pistols, c. 1670. Italy, Brescia, 17th century. Steel, chiseled decoration with walnut stock; overall: 45.1 cm (17 3/4 in.); barrel: 27.6 cm (10 7/8 in.); bore: 1.3 cm (1/2 in.). The chiseling of gun ornament is a task comparable to sculpture on a miniature scale, carried out in an extremely hard material. Since this was usually beyond the skill of most gunsmiths, it was not uncommon for such work to be contracted out as occurred here. While the barrels are signed P. Moretta, the lock plates of these pistols are signed Carlo Lerme, who also chiseled the mounts.

Gunsmith: Alfred Gauvain (French, Paris 1801-1889 Paris). Date: possibly 1844.This pistol may have been exhibited at the Exposition Universelle in 1855 in Paris, where Gauvain received a medal of honor for several pistols. Target gun used by the Guild of Arquebusiers in Amsterdam.The support stand on this target gun is in the form of a taloned eagles claw grasping a ball, a reference to the Guild of Arquebusiers in Amsterdam. Civic guardsmen would grasp the support with their left hand, while pressing their left elbow into their side. The gun has a tinder lock, which uses a piece of smouldering dried fungus, rather than a slow match, to ignite the powder.

Pair of flintlock pistols.The names on the lockplates of pistols are those of the men who assembled them (known as the gunmakers). They ordered the pistol components from various craftsmen and then put together the weapons, which they signed on the lockplate. The gunmaker Leonardus Graeff was based in Aachen, but he used the same suppliers as arms producers in Maastricht. The warriors silver-gilt helmets are characteristic of his work.

Wheellock Carbine ca. 1540-50 German The sophisticated use of gold and silver in the decoration of this weapon is exceptional. The damascened patterns on the barrel, lock plate, and mounts are echoed on the stock by engraved and inlaid foliate designs that recall bookbinders' ornament. The wheel is silvered and covered by a pierced gilt-bronze plate showing two Renaissance-inspired winged putti.The sickle-shaped spring encircling the wheel is chiseled in relief and gilt; the chiseled cock is left bright, like silver. Cased Pair of Double-Barreled Turn-Off Flintlock Pistols ca. 1800 Jean Lepage French One pistol is inscribed "Gravé par Montangy" (engraved by Montagny). It is very rare for engraving on firearms to be signed by the artist. A family of engravers named Montagny worked in Saint-Étienne, a city famous for firearms production. Fleury Montagny, perhaps the author of the exceptionally fine engraving on these pistols, is also recorded as working in the Boutet workshop in Versailles.
