Fan 1870-90 probably French The Victorians were adept at making copies of 18th century fans which are sometimes difficult to differentiate from the originals. The three fields on the front of the leaf are entirely devoted to the idealized, unspoiled country life; In the middle a gallant company that is fishing, left a pastoral scene with a shepherdess and on the right a farmer's who returns to the yoke on the shoulders and stuffed buckets from milking. Due to the hill with the castle in the background in the fishing scene, it is allowed to assume that a middle or southern European example has been used for this performance. The painting on both the front and back is finely executed, and, unlike many examples, where the back is minimally decorated, the front and the back are equally covered with finely detailed scenes. In early fans the lacquered sticks were Chinese imports but around the end of the first quarter of the 18th century, the Europeans began created lacquered sticks to imitate the Chinese examples.
