Flowers of a Hundred Worlds (Momoyogusa): Autumn Night (Aki no yoru), 1909-10. Kamisaka Sekka (Japanese, 1866-1942). Color woodcuts with gold and silver; sheet: 29.9 x 22.1 cm (11 3/4 x 8 11/16 in.). This print from a set of three woodblock printed albums displays the graphic design prowess of Kamisaka Sekka. The images were first distributed one by one to subscribers to the series but later were reissued in bound form, like this book, for mass consumers. Each print features a vignette taken from nature or Japanese literature. Many of the scenes have a long history in Japan, originating in the 900s or 1000s and having been interpreted by all manner of artists since that time. Sekkas selections hew closely to precedents from the Rinpa style originated by painter Tawaraya S?tatsu (c. 1570-c. 1640) and calligrapher Honami K?etsu (1558-1637).

On the first day of the party, boats decorated with phoenix and dragon mastheads transport musicians and noblewomen around the palace lake. Early the next morning, Murasaki dresses several of her young attendants as birds and butterflies and has them dance for the empress. In this small painting, the two scenes are conflated, with the nose of an ornate boat visible at upper left, while dancers perform for an audience of men. The Dirty Bride or The Wedding of Mopsus and Nisa ca. 1566 Pieter Bruegel the Elder Netherlandish This remarkable drawing represents a group of street performers putting on a comic folk play, The Dirty Bride (De Vuile Bruid) on the occasion of Shrovetide, the three days before Ash Wednesday. The coarse, bedraggled bride being led from a shabby nuptial tent is Nisa, while the prancing groom who leads her out is Mopsus. The account of their marriage derives from the Eighth Eclogue of the Roman poet Virgil, but also appeared in several contemporary books of proverbs, in which it was used to indicate a world turned upside down. In this print after Bruegel's drawing, which was engraved by Pieter van der Heyden and published by Hieronymus Cock in 1570, a Latin inscription was added below the image that translates "Mopsus marries Nisa, what may not we lovers hope for"i.e., anything can happen. The learned members of Bruegel's and Cock's audience surely would have appreciated the association

Relief Fragments Depicting a Winged Woman and Two Deer 1 CE-100 CE Monte Palatino. Inside some Roman houses, baths, and tombs, multiple layers of slow-drying stucco were applied to rough stone walls and divided into panels that were then painted. While the surface was still damp, fresh stucco was applied and modeled into decorative motifs and figures, which were left white to contrast with the painted background. This relief panel and its partner (1922.4428) likely came from the same building. In this panel, a winged female figure is flanked by two deer and standing on a delicate tendril motif..
