Vintage photograph. Truck loaded with perishable foods getting a snow-icing at a highway re-icing station en-route to market. Snow-ice is blown through a hose by means of high air pressure. 200 lbs of ice can be pulverized and sprayed into a truck or refrigerator car in 14 minutes time by this method. The machine that does this is called an "ice slinger"

Date: 1908.Trained as a sociologist at Columbia University, Hine gave up his teaching job in 1908 to become chief investigator and full-time photographer for the National Child Labor Committee (NCLC). The mission of the private organization was to promote legislation to protect children from exploitation by American industry. At the time, children as young as four years old labored eight to twelve hours a day in factories, tenements, and on the streets. The success of NCLC was largely dependent on its ability to sway public opinion, and Hine's decidedly unromantic, understated pictures served as a potent weapon of persuasion. To gain access to the work environment in the sixteen years he worked for the reform agency, he often traveled incognito as an insurance inspector. "The Soviet Government appears deliberately to prevent intercourse between the Russian people and the rest of the world", said Mr. Attlee, British Prime Minister, when he addressed the Trades Union Conference at Brighton on October 24th last. Referring to "The Russian Tragedy", he added that the Russians were subjected to "fantastic misrepresentations" about other nations. September 3, 1951.
