At the turn of the twentieth century, when this drawing was created, the Victorian practice of gendering interior design was still common. Rooms such as the library, study, or dining room were often designated as masculine spaces, employing heavy forms and dark colors. The hunting motif was thought appropriate for a dining room, in which the man's metaphorical spoils were enjoyed. A Salon in a Residence of the Duke of Leuchtenberg, Otto Wagner, German, 1803 - 1861, Brush and watercolor, gouache on paper, This large salon is sparsely furnished in the Biedermeier style. This library interior is a prime example of Gothic Revival vocabulary. The room is dominated by the ceiling decoration of intertwining arches. French doors are designed with pointed arches, a cross and an overdoor molding of broken arches. A chimney and mirror, flanked by large sculptures on plinths, are at right center. Drawing Room at Hatton, Warwickshire 1820-30 Attributed to Granddaughters of Dr. Samuel Parr British This amateur watercolor records an interior in Dr. Samuel Parr's substantial parsonage at Hatton, where he lived for three decades and ran a small private school for boys. We are shown three women whose dress suggests a date in the 1820s. An inscription once attached to the frame notes that the carved chair behind the table "had been for many years used in the House of Commons," was moved during alterations, passed through several owners, then presented to Dr. Parr. The text also identifies sitters in the portrait prints on the walls as Dr. Parr, Princess Charlotte, Sir Samuel Romilly, Mr. Horner-Johnson, William? The angled view of this study is dominated by portraits: large oval portraits dating from the Empire period and smaller pictures from the 1820s-1830s. Racks of pipes near the door in the rear and a large businessman's desk in the center foreground show that the room belongs to a man. A large woven urn-shaped basket in the foreground next to the desk may have served as a wastepaper basket. On the left, a library table sits in front of a banquette.
