Community Gardening- Wartime Food Production at Rowney Green, Worcestershire, England, UK, 1943 Members of the Women's Institute hard at work making jam in the Peace Hall (an army hut converted into a village hall) at Rowney Green, Worcestershire. Labelling the jam jars in the foreground are Mrs Lee (left) and Mrs Dodd. Weighing the fruit in the centre of the photograph is Mrs Nutting. Another WI member can be seen behind her, also hard at work. The fruit was provided by people in the village, from their own gardens, and the sugar came from the government. According to the original caption, this centre has made nearly a ton and three-quarters of jam in the three seasons since the scheme began.

Meal Ready to be Taken to the Former Chief of the Luftwaffe, Hermann Goering. Original Caption: Lunch for Goering; in foreground is noon meal ready to be taken to the former chief of the Luftwaffe. It consists of three pieces of brown bread (about 150 grams), one cup (and only one) of coffee, about 200 grams of dehydrated eggs, and a goulash (stew) of about 200 grams. Dining equipment consists of a spoon, canteen cup without handle, and a GI meat can. Boston, Massachusetts: March 31, 1939 A member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority at Boston University trys eating a goldfish made of cake rather than the real thing in the fish tank. The morsel was cooked up at the Statler Hotel.

This picture, published in Sydney 10 years ago, carried the caption: "Choice steaks like these are now in the luxury class and beyond the reach of the average household budget." The retail price for rump steak was then 2/4½ a pound. September 15, 1954.

Manj 790 - When Mrs. H. E. Pearson, wife of Captain H. E. Pearson of 119 Wattle Grove, Bedale, East yorkshire, U.K. arrived in Japan just one year ago, she started to collect saki bowls. Since that time Mrs. Pearson has collected over 70 different types and hopes to have a hundred by the time she returns to the U.K. Captain Pearson is a member of the British Commonwealth Occupation Force Field Security Team which has been stationed at Okayama, on the Island of Honshu. Sake is a rice wine and is the national drink of Japan. It is always served in tiny bowls, some verieties of which are very beautiful. September 24, 1953.
