COMMERCIAL PHOTOGRAPH OF RULING MACHINE FROM JOHN UNERTL OPTICAL CO.

A staff member from the Computing Section at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) Lewis Flight Propulsion Laboratory operates an International Business Machines (IBM) telereader at the 8- by 6-Foot Supersonic Wind Tunnel. The telereader was used to measure recorded data from motion picture film or oscillographs. The machine could perform 50 measurements per minute. The component to her right is a telerecordex that was used convert the telereader measurements into decimal form and record the data on computer punch cards. During test runs in the 8- by 6-foot tunnel, or the other large test facilities, pressure sensors on the test article were connected to mercury-filled manometer tubes located below the test section. The mercury would rise or fall in relation to the pressure fluctuations in the test section. Initially, female staff members, known as computers,” transcribed all the measurements by hand. S62-00957 (20 Feb. 1962) --- Project Mercury astronaut John H. Glenn Jr., enters the Friendship 7 spacecraft during the last part of the countdown on Feb. 20, 1962. At 9 47 a.m. (EST), the Atlas launch vehicle lifted the spacecraft into orbit for a three-orbit mission lasting four hours, 55 minutes and 23 seconds. Glenn and his spacecraft were recovered by the destroyer Noa just 21 minutes after landing in the Atlantic near Grand Turk Island, to successfully complete the nation's first manned orbital flight.

At Launch Pad 17-A, Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, a worker checks the wiring for a camera attached to the second stage of the Delta II rocket for the Mars Odyssey launch. The orbiter carries three science instruments THEMIS, the Gamma Ray Spectrometer (GRS), and the Mars Radiation Environment Experiment (MARIE) that will map the mineralogy and morphology of the Martian surface. Radar Used on Icebergs. Determining the distance of icebergs with radar aboard a Coast guard R5D ice observation plane on patrol off Newfoundland is Mark A. Hammer, Aviation Electronicsman, third class, USCG, of Manchester, New York. Even with radar, aerial ice detection is difficult in the foggy and misty atmosphere of the Grand Banks. On many days, the ice Patrol was forced to ground the planes because of these conditions, and had to rely on the cutters Androscoggin, Acushnet, and the oceanographic vessel Evergreen for iceberg guard duty. Radar calculations are entered in a log with the time. After the flight these entries are checked against loran fixes obtained along the flight track by the navigators. From the resulting data accurate locations of icebergs are marked on ice charts at International Ice Patrol Headquarters, and ice bulletins are broadcast each day to warn ships.

Women Adequately Filling Posts In NACA Laboratory: Nearly 200 women are employed at the Langley Laboratory of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics in a limited capacity as mechanicsÕ helpers and minor laboratory aids on the jobs formerly handled by men, according to E.H. Derring, of the Aerodynamics Division. Many phases of the operations of various wind tunnels at the laboratory are now handled by women with experienced male supervision. Mr. Derring said, pointing out that the reading of the data indicated on wind tunnel instruments during a test is done in a large measure by women. In addition to reading the instruments and computing and integrating engineering test data obtained from tunnel investigations, the minor laboratory aides assist in the preparation of aircraft models preliminary to testing. Women employees who will serve in the Aerodynamics Division of the Laboratory attend an orientation class for two weeks, during which they receive instruction on phases
