Nobel Prize For Swedish Doctor.Professor Hugo Theorell at work in his laboratory.This year's Nobel Prize for medicine, worth about £14,000, was awarded yesterday to professor Hugo Theorell, 52, the blood specialist, for his discoveries concerning the oxidation enzyme.He has been a director of the Nobel institute of Bio chemistry in Stockholm since 1935. Research for which Prof. Theorell is honoured dates back to 1934 when he succeeded in producing for the first time in pure form the so-called "Yellow Enzyme" which influences combustion in living cells. Money to Burn - Finance Reconstruction... Mrs. Bertha S. Walker, employee of the Redemption Division of the Bureau of printing and Engraving, is working on a burned money case. She is in charge of the mutilated money section. Two small cans were sent to her department with a statement that one contained $600 and the other, $75. Mrs. Walker sorts the fragments and pastes down individual bills. If the right amount can be found, the entire amount will be redeemed in new currency. Three fifths of a bill must be presented to get full value; clearly over two-fifths for half value. Analysing Sea Water. On board the Coast Guard icebreaker Northwind, Mr. Robert Rush of the U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office, Washington, D.C., makes a chemical analysis of sea water to determine its oxygen content. This was part of the process of gathering oceanographic data from the 75 stations which the Northwind charted in the Gulf of Anadyr and Northern Bering Sea between July and October. Scientists from the Universities of Washington and Oregon as well as from the U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office accompanied the Northwind to help with the oceanographic project. Observers from the U.S. Weather Bureau also went along to lend their skills in probing the upper atmosphere.

Blood Drying Unit- Processing Blood in the Laboratory, Cambridge, England, UK, 1943 A member of staff at the blood drying unit based at Cambridge University draws sterile, filtered plasma from test tubes into standard transfusion bottles. She is using a pipette-type piece of apparatus to suck the liquid with her mouth into the pipette to transfer the plasma into the bottles.

Electric machines. The image shows the sewing of bulb spirals of the lumelamp. Each spiral is examined under the microscope before it goes on. The finest spirals have a thread, as only 0.013 mm in diam. and wound in 3,000 turns on a length of about 5 cm. The value of the spirals is estimated at SEK 30,000 / kg.
