Portion of a Historical Text Portion of a Historical Text, ca. 1809-1743 B.C.E. Papyrus, ink, 35.1446a-e: 11 1/2 × 71 5/8 in. (29.2 × 182 cm). When complete, the papyrus to which this fragment belonged measured almost seven feet long. The texts are written in a cursive form of hieroglyphs called hieratic. Differences in handwriting and in the historical events described demonstrate that different scribes added new inscriptions over several generations. The most important text recounts the efforts of a Thirteenth Dynasty Theban noblewoman named Senebtisi to establish legal ownership of ninety-five household servants, whose names indicate that forty-five were of Asiatic origin. The presence of so many foreigners in a single household suggests that the Asiatic population was increasing rapidly in Thirteenth Dynasty Egypt. As was customary, some of these foreigners no doubt married Egyptians, adopted Egyptian beliefs and cultural traditions, and were absorbed into the cultural mainstream.

$Fragments of Rhind Mathematical Papyrus Fragments of Rhind Mathematical Papyrus, ca. 1493-1481 B.C.E. Papyrus, ink, Largest Fragment: 6 5/16 x 3 3/8 in. (16 x 8.5 cm). This papyrus was most likely a mathematical reference textbook for the use of scribes. These fragments became separated from the main papyrus when the roll was broken into two parts, probably at the time of its discovery in the mid-nineteenth century. The fragments seen in the upper register, and those few on the right, are from the end of a section that dealt with the simplification of fractions. The fragments in the five lower registers on the left come from the beginning of the section that demonstrated the equitable division of one, two, six, seven, eight, and nine loaves of bread among ten men. Lining of a Cap. Date: 12th-13th century.These paper fragments arrived at the Museum as the inner lining of a silk cap (46.156.11a). The much evident folded lines are most likely related to this use. While the textile of the cap is attributed to Seljuq Iran, the style of the inscriptions on these paper fragments is similar to Ayyubid, late Fatimid or early Mamluk cursive scripts. Reign: Joint reign of Hatshepsut and Thutmose III. Date: ca. 1479-1458 B.C..This piece of inscribed linen is part of a sheet used in the wrapping of the mummy of a middle-aged man. It was probably inscribed by the embalmer, as were four other pieces of linen used in the embalming (36.3.179-.181, .183). The hand writing on all of the pieces is the same. The man, whose name was not recorded, was buried on the hillside below the tomb of Senenmut (36.3.252), TT 71 in the Sheikh Abd el-Qurna cemetery in Western Thebes. Fragments from a Book of the Dead. Dimensions: mounted in 4 frames, each 28.2 x 38 cm (11 1/8 x 14 15/16 in.). Dynasty: Dynasty 18, possibly later. Reign: Amenhotep III. Date: ca. 1390-1353 B.C..Fragments of a papyrus mounted in four frames, with additional fragments in two dishes, discovered in Tomb MMA 831 (TT 297). This tomb belonged to an 18th Dynasty official named Amenemotep (also called Djehutynefer) and thus the papyrus may date to this era, specifically to the reign of Amenhotep III; however, a Ramesside date for the papyrus has also been suggested. The text is in vertical columns, primarily in black ink with rubrics in red. The hand is large and very fine. The vignettes used a polychrome palette that included red, black, yellow, white, red, and blue.This frame includes fragments of red and yellow borders and hieroglyphs in vertical columns. Papyrus fragments from the Book of the Dead of the Scribe Roy ca. 1323-1295 B.C., possibly New Kingdom These fragments come from a Book of Coming Forth by Day, commonly known as a Book of the Dead, dedicated to a scribe named Roy. This official lived during the late 18th or early 19th century, likely during the reign of Haremhab or later. Said to have been found with a heart scarab (21.2.19-Deaccessioned) and a double ba-bird amulet (21.2.20), the papyrus from which these fragments come would have been buried with Roy, meant magically to assist him with his journey to the afterlife and his eternal existence there as one of the blessed dead.. Papyrus inscribed with accounts of beer and bulls ca. 1981-1975 B.C. Middle Kingdom The subject-matter on the recto (front side of the papyrus), where the beginning is damaged, includes beer, bulls, and possibly land; on the verso (back side of the papyrus), the text begins with: Account of the land which the Master (life, prosperity and health) gave to the ka-servant Ipi”. This master” may well have been the deceased for whom Ipi acted as ka-servant (funerary priest). The recto area is divided into squares that contain numbers.. section of the Rosetta Stone a granodiorite stele, found in 1799, inscribed with three versions of a decree issued at Memphis, Egypt, in 196 BC during the Ptolemaic dynasty on behalf of King Ptolemy V. The top and middle texts are in Ancient Egyptian using hieroglyphic script and Demotic script, respectively, while the bottom is in Ancient Greek. As the decree has only minor differences between the three versions, the Rosetta Stone proved to be the key to deciphering Egyptian hieroglyphs. The stone, carved during the Hellenistic period
