An early map of Southeast Asia showing the extent and limitations of European knowledge of the region. While the larger islands of Indonesia are charted with some accuracy, the southern coast of Java and the Lesser Sundas are charted only in general outline, and New Guinea is particularly incomplete. In all areas we see coastal features and settlements, but there is little interior detail. The Philippines are well described, and the Mariana Islands (Ladrones) are given undue size and prominence.

This late-18th-century map, which was based on earlier works by the French royal geographer, Robert de Vaugondy, depicts the West Indies, the chain of islands enclosing the Caribbean Sea. Stretching in an arc from southern Florida to the northern coast of South America, these islands have been divided into three groupings by geographers -- the Bahamas (Lucayas), low lying islands east of Florida; the Greater Antilles, including the large mountainous islands of Cuba, Hispaniola, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico; and the Lesser Antilles or Caribbees, small volcanic islands bordering the Caribbean Sea on the east. Based on the work of the French geographer Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville, this map of the West Indies was published by the prolific late-18th-century British firm of Laurie and Whittle. The map encompasses a region that modern geographers refer to as Middle America, the lands and islands bordering the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. In presenting the European colonial rivalries for these coveted lands, the map maker used six colors to symbolize those areas under the control of Spain, England, and France, the major players in this colonial arena, as well as the lesser participants -- the Netherlands, Denmark, and Sweden.
