American engineer and inventor Robert Fulton (1765-1815) is usually credited with inventing the steamboat, but actually he was the one who first put the design into practice. This illustration shows Fulton's first boat, Clermont, in the middle on the Hudson River. The other illustrations shows the workings of the steamboat. The book dates to 1876.

Exploration of Central Africa. In mid-1883, Henry Morton Stanley (1841-1904), who was exploring the Congo with much hardship, asked the International African Association (International Association for the Exploration and Civilization of Central Africa), whose president was King Leopold II of Belgium (1835-1909), for a light river-going vessel that could be easily transported by land when navigation was interrupted by geographical features. The Association passed the commission to the shipbuilders Yarrow & Company, outside London. The vessel consisted of six galvanised steel sections, which were bolted together. It was 21 metres long and 3 metres deep, with two steam engines and a broad-bladed wheel instead of a propeller. It could be transported by land divided in these sections. The Ark Royal (1587), by Claes Janszoon Visscher (Claes Jansz Visscher), (1587-1652) The galleon 'Ark Raleigh' was built at Deptford for Sir Walter Raleigh in 1587. The following year she was commissioned into the Royal Navy and re-named the 'Ark Royal'. She was the Lord High Admiral's flagship against the Spanish Armada in 1588. The vessel was 100 feet long on the keel, had a beam of 37 feet and carried 44 guns.
