Africa, 19th century. Job was the son of a Fulani chieftain who assumed the attributes of a sovereign in the region of Bondou, located between the Gambia and Senegal. Having been sent on business to the banks of the Gambia, his father strictly forbade him from crossing the river so as not to fall into the hands of the Mandinka, who were his worst enemies. Curiosity led him to disobey orders, and he fell into the hands of the Mandinka, who surprised him while he was sleeping. He was taken to Joar, where he was sold as a slave to Captain Pyke, who had orders to transport a shipment of slaves to the plantations of America. The caption for this 1917 illustration reads: I saw in a great cavern a group of little goblins - Undine by Friedrich Baron de la Motte Fouque adapted by Mary MacGregor. The image illustrates Undine, a fairytale novella by Friedrich de la Motte Fouque in which Undine, a water spirit, marries a knight named Huldebrand in order to gain a soul. Published in 1811, it is an early German romance, which has been translated into English and other languages.

The caption for this 1923 illustration reads: Zidovin threw the iron club into the air and caught it with one hand. The great Russian hero Ilia Muromec watched this and then rode forward to do battle. Ilia was born in Kiev. For thirty years, he and twelve knights had guarded the city castle, until one day the mighty Zidovin appeared. The battle between Zidovin and Ilia was mighty and fierce, with Ilia vanquishing Zidovin.

Robin Hood and his Merry Men. The origins of the Robin Hood legend are very obscure. The first literary reference to Robin Hood comes from a passing reference in Piers Plowman, written some time around 1377, and the main body of tales date from the 15th century. 1920

The Sirens 1933 by Yuri Vasnetsov (1900-1973), Soviet painter and graphic artist. His work was closely linked with the traditions of Russian folk art. In Greek mythology, the Sirens, were dangerous creatures, who lured nearby sailors with their enchanting music and singing voices to shipwreck on the rocky coast of their island.

According to Greek and Roman mythology, the Trojan Laocoon warned his fellow Trojans not to bring the giant wooden horse, gifted to them by the Greeks, within the walls of troy. Poseidon, the god of the sea and a deity who favored the Greeks, sent sea-serpents from the sea to strangle Laocoon. The horse was the Greek hero Odysseus' idea and the Greeks had a Greek named Sinon tell the Trojans that if the Trojans did not bring it within the city walls, the Greeks would defeat the Trojans. This early 1900s illustration shows the Trojans reveling in the thought that the horse was about to bring them victory in the long war. But, the result was very different. The Greek soldiers hidden within the horse crept out that night and defeated the Trojans and burned Troy.

This illustration from a 1910 edition of The Lady of the Lake by Sir Walter Scott shows Ellen and James. Sir Walter Scotts The Lady of the Lake was published by Richard Scott of New York in 1813. The six-canto poem tells the story of King James Vs struggle against James Douglas, and the affections of three suitors towards James Douglas daughter, Ellen. The narrative takes place over six days in the Trossachs region of Scotland, mainly Ellens Isle in Loch Katrine. Eventually it is revealed that one of the suitors is in fact James V, and James Douglas is pardoned due to the Kings affection

Shadow play (Chinese: 影戏, pí yĭng xì) or shadow puppetry is an ancient form of storytelling and entertainment using opaque, often articulated figures in front of an illuminated backdrop to create the illusion of moving images. It is popular in various cultures. At present, more than 20 countries are known to have shadow show troupes. Shadow puppetry originated during the Han Dynasty when one of the concubines of Emperor Wu of Han died from an illness. The emperor was devastated, and he summoned his court officers to bring his beloved back to life. The officers made a shape of the concubine using donkey leather. Her joints were animated using 11 separate pieces of the leather, and adorned with painted clothes. Using an oil lamp they made her shadow move, bringing her back to life. Shadow theatre became quite popular as early as the Song Dynasty when holidays were marked by the presentation of many shadow plays. During the Ming Dynasty there were 40 to 50 shadow show troupes in the city
