Square Piano before 1794 Thomas Western Thomas Western moved to New York city early in 1794, moved to Charleston, South Carolina in 1805, and later to Alexandria, Virginia. This instrument bears a label from when he built pianos in London and may have been brought with him when he moved to the United States. Technical description: Rectangular mahogany and mahogany veneer case with inlaid geometric striping, border of lighter veneer on nameboard and cheeks, on integral table stand with 4 turned, reeded legs with casters and brass mounts (the legs may be later); removable panel over opening in bottom below soundboard; heavy diagonal brace across bottom; compass FF-f3 (61 keys), ivory naturals with molded fronts, blackened hardwood slips over softwood accidental blocks; 2 handstops, 1 in well at left of keyboard raising dampers by lifting a strip of wood beneath damper arms, 1 mounted vertically in right keywell wall raising mute (cloth-covered batten) against strings near nut; oblong, mo

Cane side chair. Culture: British. Dimensions: 52 1/2 x 18 x 14 1/2 in. (133.4 x 45.7 x 36.8 cm). Date: 1690-1710.This English-made side chair was originally part of a set of six that may have belonged to the Reverend Samuel Browne (d. 1749) of Abington, Massachusetts. The chair switched hands and families many times over the next several generations until it was bought by H. Eugene Bolles, whose collection of American furniture was considered the finest of its kind. In 1909, Mrs. Russell Sage purchased the Bolles collection and gifted it to the Museum. Side Drum 18th century Dutch Side drums were the most important instrument in the infantry of European armies. They were used in the field to signal to troops and to provide cadences for marching armies. This drum was worn on a sling to the players side, hence its name. Snares, or cords, strung across the bottom head rattled when the drum was played and gave it a characteristic buzzing sound. This drum survives with two eighteenth century in a brass carrier. There is also a leather sling with a brass hook for carrying the drum. Technical description: Brass shell, tab seam, top and bottom edges rounded over towards interior of the drum. Rope tension with ten leather tugs. Wooden counter hoops painted painted withtriangles of red, white and blue. Ten drilled holes in each rim through which the rope passes. Brass, j-hook snare adjuster mounted vertically, parallel to the shell. Calfskin heads. Two gut snares held opposite the strainer by a leather strap.. Side Drum 501452
