Vorsterman was already working as a engraver at the age of 12. In 1617 or 1618 he came as a student in the studio of the Antwerp artist Peter Paul Rubens, where he received the master title in 1620. Rubens had Vorsterman made engravings to his paintings. The relationship deteriorated and Vorsterman left for England in 1624. Jan Snellinx 1630-1633 Flanders. Anthonie van Dyck created a series of 80 portraits of dignitaries and artists entitled The Iconography while he was in Antwerp, between his return from Italy in 1626 and his departure for England in 1631. This print depicts the history painter Jan Snellix (1544-1638). The series, left unfinished, reveals the artistís astonishing virtuosity with the etching needle, often drawing spontaneously on the copper plate, as seen in this and other early known states. Date: 1818-28.Bonington met Delacroix in 1825 who encouraged him to create historical genre subjects. Old master paintings were an important source of inspiration and Bonginton here uses brown wash to copy Rembrandt's "Portrait of an Old Man with a Stick and Beret" (Gemaldegalerie Alte Meister, Dresden, now attributed to a follower). Since he reverses the original, Bonington must have worked from a print, using brown wash in masterly fashion to capture a range of textures.
