Portrait of Alfred de Musset (1810-1857), c. 1850s. Alexandre Bida (French, 1823-1895). Black chalk and graphite with stumping, watercolor, gouache, and fabricated colored chalk on medium weight wove paper; overall: 43.6 x 30.7 cm (17 3/16 x 12 1/16 in.). This portrait is one of only a few that Alexandre Bidaknown primarily for his depictions of North Africacreated during his career. It depicts the celebrated French poet and novelist Alfred de Musset (1810-1857). Bida was commissioned to create illustrations for an 1865 publication of Musset’s collected writings, and the drawing was likely completed in commemoration of that project.

Portrait of Jules Jacquemart, from "Gazette des Beuax-Arts" 1876 Marcellin-Gilbert Desboutin Desboutin's portrait accompanied the catalogue raisonné of the prints of Jacquemart by Louis Gonse (1846-1921) published in eight parts between 1875 and 1880. This was part of a series dealing with contemporary printmakers: "Les Graveurs Contemporains." Jacquemart was a prolific etcher who worked extensively for leading French art periodicals, including the "Gazette des Beaux-Arts" and "L'Art", reproducing particularly sculpture and decorative arts. He was a founding member of both the Société des Aquafortistes and the Société des Aquarellistes, and his reputation extended to the United States where he undertook work in 1871 for the newly founded Metropolitan Museum of Art..
