Silas Deane was the Continental Congress's secret diplomat in Paris to negotiate financial and military assistance from France. Deane also recruited foreign military officers, including Lafayette, Baron Johann de Kalb, Thomas Conway, Casimir Pulaski, and Baron von Steuben. This good work was canceled out by accusation of accepted bribes. Also, in 1781 some of his correspondence fell into British hands in which he revealed he thought the American cause would fail (BSLOC_2019_4_164)
