Portrait of a Man 1760 Thomas Frye Irish Frye moved to London from Ireland in his twenties to work as a portrait and miniature painter. In 1744 he co-founded the Bow porcelain works, managing the enterprise until 1760, when ill health forced him to stop. He devoted his remaining years to creating dramatic mezzotint portraits, the first set of twelve described in the Public Advertiser of 1760 as "in the manner of Piazzetta, drawn from Nature and as large as life." This drawing likely was made in preparation for a mezzotint (unrealized) and shows a man from behind looking at a board or framed canvas. His right hand supports his chin, causing a ruffled cuff to splay out and allowing Frye to create a delicate visual interplay between passages of white and dark chalk.. Portrait of a Man 341756

William Merritt Chases knack for realistic characterization is evident in these deftly executed informal portraits, possibly representing his fellow students at the Royal Academy in Munich. Madame Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, née Madeleine Chapelle 1814 Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres French Ingres and Madeleine Chapelle were introduced by her cousin and corresponded only briefly before Chapelle moved to Rome, where the artist was living at the time; they were married less than a year later. In that brief period, Ingres made four portraits of her, including this one, in which she gazes steadily and lovingly at her soon-to-be husband. Her fuller figure here suggests that she may have been pregnant. The couples only offspring was sadly stillborn the year of the portraits execution..
