Le Ballon de Gonesse, Jean-Baptiste Marie Huet, (French, 1745-1811), Oberkampf & Cie., (Jouy-en-Josas, France, 1759-1815), Medium: cotton Technique: printed by engraved copper plate on plain weave, The design was assembled from contemporary prints depicting two separate balloon flights from Paris in 1783. One balloon landed in the village of Gonesse; frightened villagers mistook the ballon for a monster and called for an exorcism. The second flight, the first to carry human passengers (Nicolas Robert and Jacquest Charles), landed on the Nesles plain 22 miles from Paris, where it was met by a delegation of citizens. In the middle of this field a shepherd is seated in light-red overbeam, with spin skirts in the belt; She presents a two-earkan to a right of her standing shepherd, who raises her head under the chin. He wears weak stevels of beige, red leather stockings and blue top stocks, a bone with belt to which many Utensiles hang on, he has stored a blue shoulder from front to the shoulders of the front: his face is briefly framed by short hair. On the left is a lamb with raised head, in the foreground an apple tree. Furthermore, two birds between the flowers and at the bottom of a seated and a hopping bunny.

Embroidered Sampler 1800 Laura Hyde American This is one of three similar samplers (the other two are in private collections) that can be traced to girls who lived in the Franklin/Norwich area of Connecticut. Illustrated with exotic scenes of faraway lands, they are some of the most unusual samplers stitched by early nineteenth-century schoolgirls. Panel with five phoenixes in a garden. Culture: China. Dimensions: 118 1/2 × 82 in. (301 × 208.3 cm). Date: 18th century.Large pictorial silk tapestries such as this one were mostly woven in the imperial workshops in Suzhou, a textile center in southeast China. The bright yellow background, a color exclusive to the emperor, further confirms its imperial origins. The five phoenixes probably refer to the five species of this auspicious bird in Chinese myths. This piece is paired with another five-phoenix panel in The Met collection, and the set could represent the five ideal relationships (wulun) in Confucianism: between father and son, husband and wife, emperor and official, senior and youth, and among friends. Book cover after 1651 British This volume is a compendium of the writings of King Charles I pertaining to the last years of his reign. It is divided into two parts"matters Civil" and "matters Sacred"and includes additional material gathered from his supporters about events surrounding his death. It constitutes an expanded edition of an earlier compilation, the Eikon Basilike [Image of the King: The Poutraicture of His Sacred Maiestie in His Solitudes and Sufferings, a 1649 printing of which is bound into the second part of the volume. The Eikon Basilike purported to be a collection of the writings of Charles I that presented the major events of his life and reign from his own point of view in language that was simple, direct, and, for a monarch, unprecedentedly personal. The Twelve Ages of a Man: The Last Three Ages (54-72), or Winter ca. 1515 Probably after a design by the Workshop of Bernard van Orley Netherlandish This is the fourth in a set of four tapestries illustrating the life of a man as divided into twelve periods of six years. Aeolus, ruler of the winds, in the center, stands for the wintertime of life. The symbols and occupations of three months, October, November, and December, represent the years from ages 54 to 72, traditionally identified as the final three ages of a man, equated with old age, infirmity and death. Aeoluss two attendants may be personifications of Snow and Frost. The owl symbolizes sleep and death.Each of the three vertical sections includes a roundel at the top surrounded by twenty-four hourglasses on a ground that is light above and dark below, in varied proportions, according to the seasons.
