These photos were taken as part of physiological research conducted by E.K. Marshall in the Research Division of the Chemical Warfare Service in 1918.

In this image, taken in November 1918, it shows the Metallographic Laboratory of the Bureau of Mines at the Pittsburgh, PA station. The laboratory was established in April 1918 to conduct cooperative work with the Inspection Division of the Ordnance Department of the U.S. Army, examining metals and alloys used in ordnance. The laboratory was directed by Dr. F.G. Cottrell, Chief Metallurgist of the Bureau of Mines.
