This photo dates to March 2018 in Palermo in Sicily. It shows the Motya Charioteer, which dates to around 350 B.C. It is a rare example of a Greek victor's statue and is believed to represent a guy who won a chariot race some 2,500 years ago. It was found in 1979 off the tiny island of Motya off the western coast of Sicily. His long tunic identifies him as a charioteer. This photo shows the front side of the charioteer.

Lazio Rieti Cantalupo in Sabina Palazzo Camuccini2. Hutzel, Max 1960-1990 Post-medieval: Architecture. The palazzo was built by the architect Giovan Domenico Bianchi (16th century) for Cardinal Pierdonato Cesi, on the site of a medieval castle, parts of which were used in the new structure. The facade consists of a portico surmounted by a loggia. Antiquities: Sculpture. A collection of ancient artifacts is housed in the palazzo. German-born photographer and scholar Max Hutzel (1911-1988) photographed in Italy from the early 1960s until his death. The result of this project, referred to by Hutzel as Foto Arte Minore, is thorough documentation of art historical development in Italy up to the 18th century, including objects of the Etruscans and the Romans, as well as early Medieval, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. Images are organized by geographic region in Italy, then by province, city, site complex and monument.

Bust of the Greek Slave, after 1845-1846, Hiram Powers, American (Woodstock, Vermont), American, 1805-1873, 24 1/2 in. (62.23 cm), Marble, United States, 19th century, This is an idealized representation of a Greek woman enslaved by Turks during the Greek Revolution (1821-32), when Greeks fought for independence from the Ottoman Empire, which had ruled them since 1453. Powers created a full-length, life-size sculpture called The Greek Slave in 1843. He modeled it in clay, and his studio then produced six full-size marble versions. One was exhibited at the Crystal Palace Exhibition (worlds fair) in London in 1851 and in New York a few years later. The works great popularity prompted the creation of smaller replicas and also many busts, such as this one. In the years leading up to the American Civil War (1861-65), antislavery groups adopted this image as a symbol.

Hutzel, Max 1960-1990 Exterior views of part of the former Villa Frigeri, which along with a neighboring palazzo, houses the Museo Nazionale di Antichita. Views also of the gardens, fountain (17th century) and the restored interior. The so-called "Capestrano Warrior" (5th century B.C.) is found in the Antiquities core collection under Men, Youths, Warriors--Stone--Etruscan, Italic. Hutzel views include statues, funerary monuments, portrait busts and mosaics, many of which were excavated from Alba Fucens. Hutzel paid particular attention to the colossal statue of Hercules (late Hellenistic); the funerary temple reliefs of Lucius Storax; various nudes, torsos and heads, including the portrait bust of Agrippina Minore and the sepulchral portrait relief of Lucius Poditius (1st century A.D.); gravestones with inscriptions and bas-reliefs; Roman coins; bronze figurines (mainly warriors); and bronze vessels, utensils, helmets and ornaments.

The varied assortment includes figures from the three traditional scenes of a complete Neapolitan presepio: the Nativity, with angels, shepherds, and sheep; the procession of the three Magi, with their colorful retinue of attendants; and the varied and gay crowd of country and town people thronging the tavern, or inn, of Bethlehem the diversorium mentioned by St. Luke, where on the Holy Night there was no place for Mary and Joseph. Averaging between twelve and fifteen inches in height, according to the position they were to take in perspective in the stage set, the figures are pliable and can be given poses at will, according to their facial expressions.
