Bronze statuette of a standing male figure ca. 500-450 B.C. Campanian or South Italian Greek The statuette is a rare and unusual sculpture best described as a Campanian (west central Italian) bronze of the fifth century B.C. It most likely served as a votive offering to the gods, presented at a sanctuary either in anticipation of divine favor or in fulfillment of a previous promise or vow. The precise identity of the figure is uncertain; both his close-fitting garment and tight-fitting cap adorned with rosettes are uncommon details. The bronze is especially interesting for its remarkable stylistic affinities with both Greek and Etruscan art, characteristic of Campanian works made in a region where Greek, Italic, and Etruscan peoples were living in close proximity.. Female Figure 12th-9th century B.C. Tlatilco This solid, hand-modeled ceramic figurine is made of tannish gray clay and may bear traces of a red pigment. The figure, which wears a ponytail draped over her right shoulder, has almond-shaped eyes, shortened arms, broad hips, and a narrow waist. The back is anatomically undifferentiated and no buttocks are indicated.Sculpted some three millennia ago in the Valley of Mexico, this figurine belongs to a group of ceramic effigies known collectively as the Tlatilco "pretty ladies." Depicting females with large heads, small waists, and prominent hips, these handheld sculptures present a fairly standardized body type and are typically fired to red, buff, or brown tones. As the popular embodiments of an ideal feminine form, the Tlatilco "pretty ladies" are part of a centuries-long tradition in which eccentricities and religious imagery predominate. Female figure from a group statue ca. 1981-1640 B.C. Middle Kingdom One of two female figures that flanked the legs of a larger seated male statue, this was found together with its companion female figure (33.1.6) and fragments of other statues in a shaft within the funerary enclosure of Senwosretankh at Lisht South. Senwosretankh’s mastaba dates to the late years of Senwosret I or the early years of his successor Amenemhat II. However judging by its style, this figure was created during the later Middle Kingdom. But when this animal was depicted, usually it was represented by the female tigress. In myth, Dionysus is sometimes associated with the tiger, riding on its back in processions. Date: 4th century B.C..The Sacred Animal Necropolis at North Saqqara comprised catacombs and temples for several sacred species, among them the baboons who during their lifetimes were kept in the precinct of the Temple of Ptah-under-his-moringa-tree at Memphis. The temples and other surface structures all stood on a large connecting terrace built up against the cliff into which the catacombs were cut. This statue along with another of similar size but somewhat different appearance was found by the Egypt Exploration Society during its excavations at the Sacred Animal Necropolis. The statues had been anciently thrown down a stairway in the baboon catacombs, so that their original positions are not known. Date: ca. 1390-1352 B.C..This extraordinarily lifelike animal head was once part of a hippopotamus statue about three feet in length. Comparisons with other sculptures from the period indicate that it was created during the reign of Amenhotep III. The seated statues that the king dedicated to the goddess Sakhmet are well known; their feline heads display hollow sinewed cheeks and knobby facial bones similar to those on the hippo. This head may have come from Amenhotep's mortuary temple on the west bank of the Nile opposite modern Luxor. This temple was mostly dismantled in ancient times, but the site is marked by two colossal statues of the king known as the colossi of Memnon.Excavators have found another, even larger, hippo statue, also of Egyptian alabaster, at the site. Head and foreleg of a snarling lion ca. 9th-8th century B.C. Assyrian This substantial piece of ivory in the shape of a lions foreparts, carved in the round, was probably part of a piece of elite furniture. Carved ivory pieces like this one were often inlaid into a wooden frame using joinery techniques and glue, and could be overlaid with gold foil or inlaid with colored glass or stone pieces to create a dazzling effect of gleaming surfaces and bright colors. The eye socket is hollowed out to receive an inlay in contrasting materials, now lost. The mane is carved as a series of overlapping individual locks, and other details are similarly precisely indicated, such as the bared teeth and the tensed muscles in the foreleg and muzzle. Lions, which were associated with royalty and with the warlike goddess Ishtar, seem to have been frequently depicted in ivory and used as the support for elaborate chairs or thrones. Date: 1000-300 BC.This stylized, hollow figurine (dogu) of a female is representative of the type found in the Tohoku region of northern Honshu and made during the Late and Final Jomon periods. The most arresting aspect of these figurines is their large bisected coffeebean-shaped eyes. While the true meaning of this convention remains unknown, the eyes are often likened to the snow goggles worn by the Inuit of North America. The nose and mouth are merely suggested by small holes. A crown sits atop the figure's head, and her body is decorated with deeply incised lines and areas impressed with cord-markings that may represent tattoos. Other, more complete examples of this type have fleshy torsos with bare navels above thick, sturdy legs. The emphasis on the pointed breasts and generous hips of these figures suggests that they functioned as fertility symbols. Museum: M

Pulcinella 1759-80 Real Fabrica de Buen Retiro It is unclear whether this figure of Pulcinella was produced at Capodimonte in Italy or its successor factory at Buen Retiro in Spain. When Charles VII of Naples became Charles III of Spain in 1759, he moved the entire operation, including forty workers and five tons of raw material, from Capodimonte to the palace of Buen Retiro, outside of Madrid. The factory mark of a fleur-de-lis remained in use in the new location, and thus it is often difficult to distinguish wares and figures made in the last years at Capodimonte from the early products of Buen Retiro.In this depiction of Pulcinella, the well-known character from the Italian commedia dell'arte is shown consuming spaghetti, once held in his right hand but now broken off. Pulcinella is commonly associated with food and gluttony, and his attributes here include Parmesan cheese, a grater, a carafe of wine at his feet, and a covered jar that presumably contains the spaghetti he is eating.

The Tang Dynasty (June 18, 618 June 1, 907) was an imperial dynasty of China preceded by the Sui Dynasty and followed by the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms Period.
